Tokyo Marui Evolt AEG System

Mariu's take on a GBLS DAS then?  Since becoming a cork-sniffing elitist GBBR user I've lost any interest in AEGs, but I must admit this does look interesting.  I'm not going to hope the blow-back is any better than the NGRS but I could go for a 'mechanically correct' AEG with Marui workmanship as a winter backup to gas guns or for days when I just want a quick run-around and can't be bothered with the faff.

I guess a sort of DAS light maybe? I'm pretty much the same. I run GBB as much as I can and I have a DAS that I use when it's cold/miserable out, which is actually about half the year...

If you look at the 15:57 mark in the video It shows the weight used in the recoil system. It looks too large to be inside the main reciever and it has a small round indent in the front. I believe it will be a rod coming back from the piston to move it in the buffer tube. I dont see any other way that shape and size of weight could be fit inside the gun.

You're right. Rewatching the original show video at 27 mins it says "Since the FPR MkIV has the recoil mechanism inside the buffer tube, the battery is stored in the crane stock rather than inside the buffer tube".

I was pondering this too (when i saw the released stuff last week) and the biggest give away was the different stock.

Even though I am kinda drifting away from airsoft (towards RS shooting) I think the lure of being a TM fanboi means I am watching this with great interest. I would be interested to see how well 3rd parties take to this - will it be the same way they flocked around the Hi-capa, the VSR and MWS making them the de-facto thing for at least a while or will it just kinda drift along like the DAS and Systema, being "just" an alternative with a niche following.

So it's release date. I see these are available to order on impulse101. Probably just as well that I can't order right now. They also list them as only being compatible with the new batteries, which made me wonder what's going on with them. How would the third wire on the MR30 be wired up? Or is there some sort of control board on the batteries themselves that it's running to? Just pondering as to how hard it might be to run different batteries.

Also, the split gearbox design. Interesting, but it really only suits M4 variants. Nothing else breaks apart the same way. Could we see it used in G3's (for example) just to make spring change and so on easier, even if it's not possible to swap uppers in the same way? Just wondering if it might lend itself to some more interesting designs down the line or whether it'll be solely for M4's.

Depends on what you're comparing it to I suppose, but -

Built in FCU and magnetic trigger system which should give better trigger response and potentially nicer fire mode selector switch.
Hot swappable uppers (and covers for them to stop crap getting in your gearbox)
More realistic grip/motor size,
Loading/stop on empty.
Moving bolt cover (and recoil, depending on model)
Better mag feed (allegedlly)
Better consistency (being a Tokyo Marui +1 magic weapon unless you let the magic dust out)
All of the above at a slightly cheaper price if you don't like recoil but want all the other features.

I'd agree there's nothing that made me think "wow, gamechanger, must buy it", but I think it's more about building a better base gun, albeit at a higher price. Plus a few more incremental progressions/refinements.

I'm sure there will be plenty of people that say "But I can get a cyma and a Perun and...". Yes, you can, and if that makes you happy then absolutely go for it. But although in some ways Marui are often doing catchup refinements, they do usually do them to a very high standard.

Will be watching them development closely - but give it at least a year or two before I go for one in case of early issues and patches. Big fan of TM generally so trust them with this new system

I mean this gun is expensive in Japanese Yen, it's gunna be expensive in the UK innit.

AEGs definitely feel like they've hit a technical plateau where you can't really do much more with them.

That's the non-recoil so no weight, battery goes in stock tube. Recoil version comes with the crane type stock and the battery goes in the wings of that (if previous info is correct).
Still, that looks fiddly as anything, and given it's a 800mah battery, is that something anyone's going to want to attempt in the field? Certainly not with all the dust and crap that sandy sites (I'm looking at you UCAP GreenOps in the summer) conspire to put into your gun as it is.

All of this will become clearer with time no doubt, as to why we can't just install from the rear, or how the recoil version is going to route the cabling.

I could foresee aftermarket buffer tubes and extended wires/mods for both quickly appearing to make the battery insertion in the non-recoil work like a normal AR AEG. The current setup is definitely weird and awkward, maybe there's a reason why, but currently I can't see it (with the possible exception of them not wanting to make a specific non-recoil version tube where the cap comes off the back, but again, that's a strange reason imho).

I can't make up my mind if I like it or not. All AEG's are pretty much a copy of TM from the 80's to be honest and when they switched things up by introducing the NGRS models the only company to try and copy them was Army. I'm not seeing any other company wanting to make a copy of the Evolt. The non-recoil version seems like a step backwards to be honest and maybe the recoil version will offer something better as it will have the mosfet and recoil, similar to the NGRS MP5 range.

For the non blowback version, a NGRS MP5 battery and a Magpul PTS stock might be the best solution until someone figures out what the 3rd wire on the TM battery is actually doing and making compatible batteries.

UK prices seem high but that will probably drop once the initial rush for the first to have buyers is over. I think it will drop to around £680 however since they are unlikely to get any spares if it breaks it might be better going direct to Asia and getting the Evolt plus 5 extra mags and shipping for the UK $750 price.

From the cutaway pictures I've seen it looks like the rear of the buffer tube is threaded, so who knows. Unless you just can't fit the cabling in that way? Looking at it, is it just that they're selling a battery with essentially just built in larger balance leads and charging through that? In which case, custom batteries would seem more plausible.

Hyperdouraku have done an initial review (as has Mach-Sakai). Interestingly no trades though. Some will appreciate that for the chance to get their own done and maybe it simplifies things for TM.

Thought the only difference between the recoil/non-recoil was
  • Front furniture
  • Rear stock (and cable routing)
  • Recoil weight.
From what I'm looking at the electronics seems to be the same on both, unless I've missed something.
