Hi.

I’m going to start making the trek further afield to play in CQB specific sites maybe 6 times per year. All of my rifles are not really suitable - DMR, Sniper, MTW 14” etc. And my pistols are LOUD.

And so - fab excuse to start planning. I am looking for a silent loadout. Semi auto rifle, I won’t run a pistol. Small, reliable, and quiet. Can be HPA but I’d prefer not to run a tank as I’ll be up against walls.

AR-9? AEG? GBB? Help a guy out, what should I be looking at?

Silent, small, deadly. 😀

If you want quiet, don't go with a GBB. They're incredibly fun and are my personal choice and what I'd go with, but they're also loud because of the moving parts. HPA is going to be the quietest, but you said you don't want to run a tank (which is valid and one of the reasons I dislike it; my MTW 308 that I rarely use has an air stock), but a well set up AEG can be pretty quiet too. If it was me, and I wasn't allowed to go for a GBB, because gas guns are all I use these days, I'd just go with something like a Cyma mp5. If you're only looking to go 6 times per year, I wouldn't even upgrade it. Stock hop will be fine for CQB and lighter ammo anyway, and that's all I replaced on my Cyma mp5k when I still had it (but I play in woodland, so the better performance at range was worth the £10 or so)

But if it was me with no limitations, I'd go for a VFC mp7 GBB. Not quiet, but definitely fun.

Yeah. CQB you really don't need heavy BBs. Heavier BBs are great when you're shooting out to 40m+, which is pretty rare in CQB. I always think that people who run heavy BBs in CQB are just... it's a bit of a dick move.
Unfortunately, there are a few players who think that unnecessarily hurting others makes them hard, or perhaps it does make them hard in a different way.

Ok, so back to guns. That CYMA will have the generic AEP whine right? Do suppressors do anything?

All AEGs do. The best way to lessen it is to use a faster motor so the noise is a lot shorter, but it's still there. Suppressors don't do much on AEGs; I say much, because they do dampen the popping sound as the BB comes out of the barrel, but that sound itself tends to be drowned out by the gearbox noises anyway.

Yeah. In which case I might as well modify my G&G Combat Machine M4. More suitable red dot, torch, possibly upgrade the motor.

A well tuned AEG with precocking, excellent shimming and a fast and torquey motor will have absolutely minimal whine. As for suppressors, they are mostly for the looks but have a small impact on the sound.

In my opinion, you Cant go wrong with a Scorpion Evo.
Less common but you can get HPA evos which are nice and quiet.

Or an AAP-01, throw a carbine front and on it and a side folding stock and you have a very formidable CQB primary; especially with a drum mag
Its absolutely fine stock or short stroke it, put a lighter bolt and youll get very fast follow up shots.
Ive been known to carry one as a backup to my MTW mk.12 DMR.

I have seen the TM p90tr built incredibly quiet my using the included foam filled silencer and packing out the inside of the body with sound deadening foam. Same with an AUG with a phantom kit, although not really any use to you in CQB. Of course it doesn't matter how quiet your RIF is if someone is stood next to you cooking off mag after mag at a door frame.

I see I have much to learn about CQB.

Ok, I’ll take my VMP-1 and my G&G M4 and just stick some torches on them.
