Ahh, live and learn! Cheers for that nugget, Loz. The motor in my CYMA tac AK is an ICS Turbo 3000 so no wonder it meshes quietly with ICS gears. Pity those motor pinion gear removal tools cost a disproportional amount for what they are.
I think the trick with shimming is to keep going until it's too tight, than back off by the thinnest amount your available shims allow. I've started using copperslip between the bearing and outside shim, a drop of silicone oil in the bearing, and a smear of copperslip on the outside, to seal the oil in. I use SHS shims with the copper plated ones against each side of the gear. Apparently you're supposed to get them as far to the left as possible, but that doesn't always seem to work for me.
