Beginner m4 with room for improvement??

Hi all, new to the forum and looking for some advice. Looking at buying a starter gun with scope for improvement as I go. I know the M4 platform is the most widely used and am looking at going down that route. I'm used to playing with a HK 416 and like the feel of a metal gun. I know the CM16 raider is a good place to start with but is there any decent full metal alternatives that wont break the bank as I need batteries, mags etc also. Looked at the Specna Arms H06 that looks reasonable but don't have much info on the quality?? Any advice welcome. Thanks ?

Welcome to the forum.

What is your budget?  Will be easier to make recommendations if we know.

The next level up in G&G might be an option, but their ETUs/MOSFETS are meant to be a bit flakey.

ICS guns with their split gearbox are easy to work on without taking the whole gearbox apart. 

Some parts are bespoke to ICS, but not that hard to find.

thanks for the reply. Im probably looking upto about 250. If i spend much more than that i would probably just go all out and get something high end. I quite like the idea of tinkering with something without it being the end of the world if i fudge it ?.

What's wrong with polymer receivers?

You can get a cm16 with metal receiver for an extra £70 or so.

It's called the GC16. Some of these have etu and mosfet, but others don't.

The ones witnout are within your price range.

I can vouch for the GC16 range, great guns. Better internals than the CM16 range also. 

Dont be scared off off by the etu/mosfet combo. Most problems where/are due to people not using 11.1v lipos.

Not all GC16s have the etu and mosfet.

Mine for example. It's the GC16 300 BOT, and it is basically a cm16 with metal receiver. I bought it for about 207 quid about six months ago. It's even a little bit cheaper now.

Depending on if your sticking to a certain brand have a look at the ares am-016 honey badger. I’ve just bought one and extreme airsoft are doing a few on them where you get 2 batteries, charger and mag with it for £239. Means you could get some other bits if you were planning on spending £250 on the gun plus batteries etc.

ive never had an issue with ares ameoba range and tend to have a bit more FPS out the box as there American and not European (American tend to play higher FPS sites than UK). This means you don’t need to upgrade much to start but can add on as things wear and tear

No doubt a decent gun, but the OP has expressed a preference for all metal rifles, and the Amoeba is polymer.

He is looking for a metal aeg of decent quality which can be improved internally, for £200-250.

Hence my recommendations above.

The all metal Specna Arms M4 range might also be of interest to him.

thanks for the replys guys, im not adverse to the idea of a polymer gun as long as its good quality and hardwearing. Apparently there is a place near me with a range to try out guns so i shall have a look there when i get chance.

I can assure you Ares Amoeba's polymer is solid. doesn't feel plastic at all while being lighter than a metal receiver.

Had mine for years and they yet have to show a single sign of wear.

Also the ARP9 polymer seems good (and feels good, although i only had one game with mine).

Can't speak for the other brands though.

Thing is, you can get a good polymer receiver and great internals for the same price as a metal receiver but meh internals.

Personally, I have nothing against polymer. I'd love to acquire a G36c.

Ended up buying a firehawk for CQB and a Ares Octarms Km12 off here. Very happy so far, seem well made and the quick change spring on the ares is smart.

Will be putting them through there paces tomorrow.

Both are solid guns.

Just remember to upgrade the Ares bushings in a year or so, the stock ones aren't that great and they tend to wear quickly with 11.1s, although mine lasted 2 years before needing replacement (€10 worth of material).
