Airsoft in the rain

That's my bad, it was raining loads in the morning but you still got the odd 30m of sun as well. From 1pm it was relentless.

And yeah you're right about the game results - once it was clear the rain was there to stay and people started to pack up, the game lost all sense of direction and most of the village was a ghost town. People hunkered in buildings in the centre but the rest was deserted.

From the photo you and your mate did the best thing and made the most of a crap situation so kudos to you, the people that bailed... well they should have followed suit and played building hopping like most do when it pisses down there.

This is a pleasure hobby.  If people aren't enjoying it, why would they make themselves miserable by...

Think most people would agree that one of the strengths of airsoft is that there is something for everyone and most open days / walk ons can accomodate everyone.

But in this instance - an all day rolling event, in november, in the UK - people should be a bit better prepared! I'm not pro.. being wet and cold but if someone is gonna book and pay £55 for the above atleast a neutral attitude to discomfort is required.

I will out myself as the other chap in that pic and yea it was a bit of a dead afternoon. If people sack it in fair play what can we do about it? But i hope some introspection was had about kit and... grit.

I like playing in the rain, it's like being back in Nam...

But seriously I do, I like the atmosphere, it's cool.

People who pack up and want to go home either don't prepare and bring appropriate stuff or need mummy to accompany them to games more often.
My mummy says your a mean man and not to listen to you. Funny how the airsoft content I see on youtube isn't in thunder storms but instead on scorching hot days.

I'll stick to indoors for bad weather days and outdoors if forecast looks promising.  I can see your point these people can check a weather forecast before even booking let alone showing up on the day and being shocked that it's raining. There's 2 sites near me that manage rain well FWG keeps the games mostly indoors as much as possible for their site if it's raining and I've seen Fife fortresss post saying they are moving to their indoor site the Fort at lunch time to avoid rain. People don't like to play in the rain prepared or not prepared it's less fun and can even push it over to being something you don't want to do. Even if it stops raining your likely to still get soaked feet and legs depending on the grass height.

I couldn't care less.

Demonstrably untrue.

thus ruining my day

There we go.

We're talking about people who have already decided to leave the site.

All you are in control of is your reaction to that.

Now, do you think that taking the piss out of them will make them:

A) More likely to turn up again in future.

B) Less likely to turn up again in future.

This isn't hypothetical, I've seen how it goes for reenactment groups where members were berated for not showing enough loyalty.

I'd be furious

Imagine my shock.

Ah, nit picking must be one of your other hobbies?

Same here, it weeds out the moaners and you end up with people who are just there for a laugh. In my experience anyway.

Irrespective of the morals of piss-taking, I spoke to Legion (game runners for both this rainy day + the ill-fated night game they ran earlier this year that Asomodai reviewed) - they said that if stuff like that keeps up, they'd simply stop offering games if they suspected gameplay would stop halfway through.

I'd be very annoyed if interesting games on exciting sites would get cancelled because people can't be arsed to check the forecast (like@AmberYooToob has done!), couldn't be arsed to play on, or couldn't be arsed to prepare for conditions correctly.

Jesso you say one thing then contradict yourself. Then act like Roger is digging in to your family history from 3 generations ago to find out your great great granddad actually hated the rain. Your clearly too cool for school and don't care about anything except for people not liking to splish splash about with you.

One of the problems of playing in the rain, especially woodland, is not hearing or feeling hits.  Years ago I was out with some old DPM plastic waterproofs, standing under foliage and getting dripped on quite loudly ever second or so.  Got called out from someone about 30 yards away for not taking a hit.  Not sure he was right, as there was plenty of leaves between him and me and he was to the side of me.  Definitely didn't feel anything hit, but would not have heard anything anyway as the hits I did take sounded no different to the raindrops. Something to consider when playing in the rain.

If you say so sweetheart

or as i like to call hailstorms "tactical nuke" :P

i dont mind a bit of rain, but like most there's a limit, although i'll admit some of my most fun games have been in poor weather.

i do love a bit of snow though, that stalingrad vibe.

i never bother altering kit though, not had any issues so far although again i tend to call it before it becomes proper monsoon.

Oh come on! Don't pull a Duff!!

The point is: people play for as long as they want and have the right to leave when they don't enjoy the day any more.

But said people also need to understand that it is actually annoying and kind of disrespectful for others if they just pack up and leave, as it will effectively kill the day.

In general, I think many airsofters should grow a pair.

Playing in the rain has never killed anyone. Of course we're not talking about playing during a hurricane or any other apocalyptic storm, just your average rainy day.

Million ways to counter rain, by either having a spare, dry change of clothes or cheap/expensive waterproof gear.

Hit calling may become a problem, as rain drops sound terribly similar to BBs impacts, but with some experience you can definitely tell the difference.

I personally enjoy rainy airsoft days, last Sunday we were only 6 and we played at a local fort and we had a blast, so many short games we lost count at some point, but it didn't matter as we all had fun, and for the record, nobody had proper rain gear. The place doesn't even have that much indoor space, just 2 corridors on two levels joined by 3 staircases and a handful of useable rooms throughout the structure, with 2 small wings on the ground floor. We spent most of the time outside and we got drenched, but still had loads of fun.

It's more of a life long calling.

I'll assume that you know that the answer is B, less likely to show up again.

It's a curious way of going about ensuring that you have people to play with.

Why not just thank those who do show up for the time that they've stayed?

Actually C - make them think that maybe coming prepared to a day long event with less than disirable weather forecast with inadequate equipment wasn't a smart choice and quite possibly a waste of their game fee (which I think is about £55+ for longmoor on a battlesim) and everyone else's money because ultimately people's poor choices could have ruined everyone else's day.

If people can't prepare or even look at a forecast why should everyone else have to suffer and have their day and money wasted?

Edit: The thing I care less about by the way is what people think of an opinion I have. It's an opinion I'm entitled to after all much like you have your own opinion on not playing in the rain.

I don't mind playing in the rain that's what my weather proof AK is for.

i won't take my Tm 416 out though, its too precious (like me) and when I run an m4 variant I feel the need to run a fake beard and face paint full arm sleeve tattoos to keep up with the other operators, I'm not going to go to all that trouble if the rains going to wash them off in the first hour!!!

I do have general concern for my EVO in the rain. what makes your AK better for this?

I cant understand how weather is even a subject of conversation anymore, more just common sense. If its raining, wear something that stops the rain. If its hot, drink plenty of water and wear less if poss (swap from PC to chest rig for example) hardly rocket science when weather is involved or am I missing something? like @Tiercel said if its actually proper shit outside I wont bother, a few showers is nothing really that cumbersome to play through but generally looking after your stuff like anything else you own goes a long way.
Because half of society needs their hands held & arses wiped, sad but true ?

^^^ Longmoor back in November. Rained solidly all day from around 1PM, complete downpour which didn't stop until after end-ex.

Literally over half the players, around 50, packed up and tried to go home - but weren't allowed, because the game was still in play and a convoy escort couldn't be set up. Most people ended up staying in their cars for the remaining four hours.
Wusses, pay to play longmoor & sit in their cars, made of sugar lol

This is a pleasure hobby.  If people aren't enjoying it, why would they make themselves miserable by persevering?

Go on though, try and harangue folk into playing it by belittling them.

See if that results in anything other than them coming to resent both it, and you.

Not necessarily in that order.
So what we're saying is 50+ guys who dress up as rufty tufty soldiers, try to emulate combat, but bottle it as soon as it gets wet, shouldn't have the shit ripped out of them.............fuck that, where's the fun in that.

lost count of the number of events that have turned to shit because of poorly prepared wankers crying off mid game, even when the forecast has been well known in advance, no excuses, even pulling on civvy protective clothing (as long as it's not hi-viz), is preferable to everybody on site being forced to take an early bath.

I couldn't care less.

If I go to a game and half the people that turned up fuck off because they cant handle a bit of rain thus ruining my day because they cant come equipped to play through differing weather I struggle to see why I shouldn't take the piss.. if its a hobby you enjoy enough to want to play year round outside but don't take the precautionary equipment to do so again why is that everyone else's problem and why should their day suffer because people cant have common sense enough to buy a cheap bit of gortex to cover them through the rain...

Longmoor as a site would be absolute shit with just 50 players left to play the day, its a huge site. Knowing the over heads for the site I'd be furious that half the players just went and sat in their cars because of rain. The site has well over 30 playable buildings that should you wish, you could hunker down in and defend without getting even remotely damp.

Edit: Every hobby is a pleasure hobby or why else would you do it... can you imagine if rugby got called off because one half of the players didn't want to get their shirts wet!?
Amen ?

Glad other people can see I'm not just being an arse because I'm "too cool for school"

My main jacket is generally an old Berghaus jacket work supplied me with when I worked in out on sites.
