About Me

For several years, I did strange things, sometimes in strange places; then I did strange things in less strange places for a while.  Now, I do professory things in an ivory tower.

On and off, I have worked with rock bands as manager, sound engineer, lighting engineer, herder of cats, nailer of jelly to wall, and warden.

I have stood on the site of Alexandria on the Oxus and looked across the river at Afghanistan, remembering the stark beauty of that benighted country and half forgotten names and faces.  

I have wept with emotion at finally seeing the Terracotta Army and travelling on the Grand Canal in Hangzhou.

I have taken the golden road to Samarkand and stood on the walls of the Ark of Bukhara.

I have done so much but done so little.
