The 'How Did Your Airsoft Day Go? Thread

I was undecided about playing today.  The temptation to head out for a long walk instead was very strong, but I promised myself that I would do that next Saturday.  Therefore, I headed off to the site where I play most, Airsoft Plantation; more than 200 other players made the same decision, making me feel very smug that I had got there early and was able to grab a good area to set up, where I was joined by a couple of friends.

For the first game we went to the woods, which pleased me immensely as it is my favourite part of the site.  As the defenders, we had two lives between the Border and the ditch which is spanned by the Wobbly Bridge.  Our task was to prevent the dastardly reds, who started at the Border and had infinite regens on a teammate after a 30m fall back, getting three crates onto the Wobbly Bridge.  Each crate had to be carried by two players.  When the game started, I took up a position on our left; it soon became obvious that the main enemy attack was coming towards our right, so most of our early engagements were across the field in that direction.  As the enemy slowly pushed forward, I fell back towards the Kill House, from where I continued to engage the enemy, including two who I suddenly realised were on the other side of the fence from me; as they had no idea I was there, they were very surprised to suddenly be shot in the back at close range.  Eventually, I was hit and fell back towards the ditch; by this point, we were starting to be overrun; I was hit again and the enemy got their crates onto the bridge.

When the game was turned around, we decided to make our main attack down our right; our initial advance was delayed by a smoke grenade setting fire to the undergrowth, which was quickly dealt with.  We stormed forward, overwhelming the enemy and, after clearing the area around the Kill House, launched an attack on the Wobbly Bridge which saw our three crates deposited there in a significantly shorter time than our opponents had managed.

After a quick break to reload, the next game involved our team, starting at the far end of the firebreak, getting one of our bombers, who were indicated by yellow arm bands, to the heliport on the roof of The Cock Inn in the village, where they would set off a smoke grenade which was in a case.  If hit, our bombers, of whom I was one, had to return to the firebreak and find a marshal to regen; each such regen incurred a time penalty.  Regular attackers had infinite regens on a 30m fall back, while the defenders again had two lives on a 30m fall back.  I set off with the group who were attacking from the far end of the village; we quite rapidly fought our way through the Suburbs into the main part of the village, where one of our bombers completed the objective.  As we walked back to the safe zone, I was accosted  by a very upset marshal as he had lost a mighty £1 bet on me being the one who would set off the bomb.

After lunch, which saw Emily and her team feed over 200 people, the bomber game was turned around.  I started off in the suburbs, helping fight off an attacking group until I was hit, whereupon I fell back into the village, holding a position covering the rear path into it and taking out a lot of attackers, some of whom seemed to think they were hitting me, although their BBs were dropping a few metres in front of me of me.  Eventually, I was hit when the enemy broke into the rear of the village, and trudged back to the safe zone.

After reloading again, a new game was started.  Starting at the Comms Shack in the village, we had to get smoke grenades to three locations in the mortar pits, which were unknown to the defenders; these were the Bedford, the Land Rover Discovery and the bus.  We had infinite regens on a marshal, while the defenders had one life each.  Initially pushing right across the site to attack via the Comms Truck, we made rapid progress until we ran into a layer of heavy enemy resistance, which saw a lot of us repeatedly having to find the regen marshal.  Of course, the enemy defence crumbled and we were able to achieve our objectives.

This game was then turned around; I took up a position in the middle of our defence, taking out a number of attackers until I had to make a rapid tactical withdrawal (which coincidentally looked like me running away!); a while after, I was hit.  As there was no way of getting back to the safe zone without getting shot, dead players congregated by the tree line at the rear of the mortar pits, from where we had a grandstand view of the attackers' attempts to reach their objectives;  they struggled somewhat!  Halfway through this game, the bolt release catch on my SA58 disassembled itself; fortunately, I managed to find the key part and effected a repair that was better than the original assembly when I got home.

That was the end of a really good, fun day of airsoft that was played in a good spirit; the games were well designed and tested the teams.

Next Sunday, I am probably going to try a site that is new to me, which several people have recommended.  It should be interesting.

This sounds interesting.  How many DDR players were there and how strict were the kit requirements?

I usually go to these and run the WARPAC side of things but had to miss this one.  We have a FB page here if you are interested in joining https://www.facebook.com/groups/677131892467522/  Kit guides can be found here https://coldwarairsoft.co.uk/  We arent overly strict as we would prefer players over being stich counters, getting into the spirit of the game is much more important.  Repro kit is becoming available now with a set of Soviet M88 on AliExpress setting you back around £70.  The real stuff is getting a lot harder to find now especially in bigger sizes.  East German stuff is still reasonable though

Best airsoft I have ever been to - no drama no cheating no whinging.  This is our pisstake training video.  Next game in November near Bourne in Lincs

This looks great! The video is really well done.

Thanks, that is very helpful.  I have most of the East German kit, although my webbing is the later version.

That's the website I couldn't remember, thank you.

Not lying about Ben and his love of the SLR though am I? Even if his did shit its pants when he wanted to come play....

Shame you missed this one, it was fantastic

Had a fun day at Imperium yesterday, involving possibly my finest airsoft moment of all time. The two teams were set up at opposing sides of the lower half of the site. The task was to secure the APC, and transport your teams jerry cans to the APC. Once one team had done that, they had to move the APC to another location, put the VIPs inside the APC and extract. Either team could secure the APC to begin with but once it had been secured by one team, it was theirs for the rest of the game and it was up to the other team to disable it/prevent extraction.

The morning started off with a few scraps but my team (blues) managed to secure the APC. Unfortunately reds came in force and took us off the APC before we were able to transport all our jerry cans to it. Further scrapping ensued but the reds got all their jerry cans there and it was theres. We were then instructed to set up an ambush between the APC start point and the VIP location. Various groups set off, but I spied a nice little dead end in the long grass. I laid down and stayed silent/totally still. Despite just being in ODs, the enemy team walked right by me within 10 or 15 feet. I waited a minute or two longer until their team was completely facing away, then popped up and moved forward elminating the entire force guarding the APC. I moved up, waited for the APC doors to open and tapped the reds in there too. A couple more reinforcements bagged before I was shot by a sniper. Quick tally put it around 15 players elminated, or half their entire team. They fought back well but their momentum was lost and they failed to extract the VIP.

In the afternoon, the reds started with the APC on the comms tower. It was our task to assault the tower and disable the APC within an hour, but if we failed to do that we had a secondary task of capturing the intel in the FOB, which would reveal the location of some missles. If we got those back to our regen, they could be fired at the APC from a distance winning the game. I decided to leave my GBLS in the boot and roll out with the Tanaka. By the afternoon the wind had picked up and even with 0.45s it was tough to make any accurate hits beyond 50m, so I mostly stuck to harrassing the reds. 0.45s pinging off metal sheets does tend to keep people's heads down. I did have a few issues with rentals not taking hits, I watched a few bounce off them but I always see that as one of the expected downsides of long range sniping. Even so, I scored a good five or six hits with my pistol. In the end we never captured the comms tower, but we did get the intel from the FOB and managed to get the missles back to our regen with seconds to spare.

Yeh it clashed with mothers day........the game would have been very very different if Matt and I were running WARPAC as usual we had a very specific scenario planned but I can't tell you about it as we will use it next year :)

UTV? Yeh it was never actually issued.  Common mistake people often make when buying DDR gear especially the uniforms.  Clue is to look for 2 holes on each shoulder on the shirts, which is where the shoulder boards get attached.  The proper trousers also need braces to hold up!  The webbing is really basic and you can get away with a belt, y strap and AK pouch before buying anything else.  The gas mask bag is really cheap usually too and actually really really useful for carrying food, BBs and other gubbins. If there is anything you are after post on the group or the main Filmsim Cold War group and someone will probably have one for sale.

Moments like that are what make airsoft days memorable.

No mistake;  I knew what I was buying.  I buy kit to play pretend war in; UTV is far more practical than the grey rubbish which I initially used, although I do still have a set of that tucked away in the dressing up cupboard.

I have:
Helmet with camo netting.
Shirt
Trousers
Braces
Webbing
Mag pouches (7.62 and 5.45)
Backpack
Water bottle and cover

I didn't actually play too much at Worthing on Sunday. Spent most of my day helping my friend with his guns and tweaking my own ready for AI500 next weekend. I will be removing the Jaeger Precision NPAS from my MWS though as even when I opened it all the way it was still blocking a portion of the intake and I was only mustering about 1.5J on ASG orange gas; DMR limit is 1.88J and this is specifically my DMR MWS. Didn't want to put red gas in it with how the weather was as I was worried I'd cause the nozzle to explode, so out came the ol' reliable KJW m700 built as an m40a5. Fortunately that performed really, really, really well, though with how windy it was it made sniping very difficult.

The game I did play was a large game where yellow team had to gather bomb components and then bomb a base. Nobody knew where the components were, and only yellow knew which base was the final objective. I was on blue so we had to stop them, but at the time I got into the game, yellow had basically all the components and were moving the bomb around. A lot of blue team were also suffering from the classic airsoft malady known as "I don't want to get shot syndrome" and so as soon as I got into the game, I became the front line with my bolt action sniper rifle. There were a few regulars on blue who were pushing, but in such small numbers they ended up getting picked off. Eventually, the marshalls told blues what the objective base was and started to verbally prod players to stop cowering far back, especially as the yellow team got into the base and started the bomb timer; that seemed to be enough to get players to start playing a bit more aggressively and we quickly swept yellow out of the base to defuse the bomb

I will say there was some absolutely abysmal hit taking and I heard that someone threatened to punch someone. The latter was very swiftly dealt with by the marshalls, as one was in ear shot and wasn't having any of that, and there were quite a few players who got sent back to the safe zone for not taking their hits. Marshalls were really on top of it all day, so props to the marshalling team for dealing with it when it cropped up, I just haven't seen so many people taking the piss in a while.

Spent the rest of the day tweaking my m40 on the range and helping my friend with his m700 (still having issues...) and his new MWS. I also think something in my hi-capa lower is busted because it doesn't always shoot when I pull the trigger. I think one of the sears is on the way out; it still works fine, but very occasionally I will pull the trigger and nothing will happen, so AAP will be my go-to sidearm for AI500 as that is having no issues.

I am not sure really.  I will sign up for one this year.

I also have an MPiKM and an MPi-AK-74N, both with the lovely plastic furniture; both are based on CYMA RIFs.

I do like sites that follow up the tough talk about the consequences of repeated non hit taking, having a hot gun and serious bad behaviour;  the chap who runs Airsoft Plantation has no qualms about sending people home.

Staff attitude will make or break a site. It's one of the reasons I feel very lucky to have worthing as my closet site.

I didn't see any of the bad hit taking personally, but I did overhear some marshall's reminding players of the rules. And I heard about the threats second hand, glad it was dealt with immediately. The guy got shot in the plate carrier with a little bb and threatened to hit someone. Ridiculous attitude over playing make believe.

It was overall a great day though. My first in many months. I played like a regular player for once, rather than a shrubbery, and had a great time. Teams were very even in the morning. We did "sands of pain" which involved holding a button on a box to build up a timer. We lost by two seconds! But people peeled off through the day so teams had to get rebalanced past lunch a few times.

Also someone had a lipo fire in their gun that was in their car. Thankfully only the gun got damaged and no one got hurt. But the parking area got nice new smell for the morning.

Which site will you use when you come out of the closet?

A chap recently had a flashbang go off in his bag in the back of his car at AP; he chucked his bag in prior to leaving and there was a nice loud bang.

Perfect.  Next one is on 14 Nov up at Bourne in Lincs.  My local site and I can't make it as I am off to Bangface Festival

I went to Mayhem in Essex; I was disappointed, so left at lunchtime.  I won't be returning.

That's been on my radar for a while to visit, what was it that disappointed you?
I had also been considering it for a while.

On arriving, I couldn't find anyone to check in with; three of us eventually found someone in the shop/office. While everyone was prepping their kit, there was a fair amount of dry firing in the safe zone, which didn't seem to worry the staff.

The real disappointment was the games. Mayhem is very much a paintball site, with a number of different fields that could provide some interesting gameplay.  However, the four games that we played in the morning all involved the teams starting on opposite sides of a field and having to do something (move a flag, capture a flag, capture a jerrycan) that was a mechanism to bring the teams into contact.  This ended up with two lines of players shooting at each other; there was no real possibility to be sneaky or to try something creative.  I found it rather boring.

If you are considering going, be aware that they do not do hot food.  There are vending machines for fizzy drinks, chocolate and crisps and a tea/coffee dispenser, all of which take contactless payments.

One positive element is that, despite what it states on their website, they chrono on the weight of BB that you are using.
