• Hi Guest. Welcome to the new forums. All of your posts and personal messages have been migrated. Attachments (i.e. images) and The (Old) Classifieds have been wiped.

The old forums will be available for a couple of weeks should you wish to grab old images or classifieds listings content. Go Here

If you have any issues please post about them in the Forum Feedback thread: Go Here

Suggestion - Require approval on new threads for new users (i.e less than 10 posts)

Is it quicker to "@" you guys on the offenders profile rather than each individual thread?

We just need to see one example post to know what they're up to these days.  It's all the same shite.

I'm banning several a week too. I'm generally reviewing the latest posts from whatever time I wake up to around 8am

(I'd be doing that even without the spammers, as I'm the lab rat that keeps pushing the button in the hope of a reward)

Another option is to have more cleaners

The spam is being cleared within minutes, rather than hours of posting. That's not the issue really.

The issue is the fact that the spammers can register and fill the boards up very quickly - which goes back to the original point of this thread - is there any mechanism to vet the new threads created before appearing to the wider masses? I know that other forums have this mechanism - particularly for use of the classifieds/Sales (airgunforums springs to mind - every new sales thread is invisible to everyone until approved by admin).

I would rather a new member has a short probationary period, even if that's just a handful of posts to acertain that they are legit airsofters.

It's probably not gonna be helpful but when I ran our work FB page, anyone asking to join was automatically asked to answer a simple work related question, if they didn't or couldn't then they were blocked from joining.

Something as simple as this might prevent the spammers being able to join.

Newbies to the 'sport' might struggle too tho so it would need to be a very simple question regarding airsoft.

Hasn't the simple test question been suggested before?

Probably worth a try if it can be easily implemented.

I don't find the spam a huge problem as it gets cleaned quite quickly but of course prevention is better.

Question: Do you have to delete every post individually or are they all cleared when the user is banned?

Ban the spammer, all the posts go too.  It's very easy, just a moments work.

You'd think a simple question would be fine to do the job.  I'm presuming the spam posts are coming from a bot that only knows what the 'registration' and 'post a thread' pages look like.  Any change to the registration page will break the automated script.  However, these days you can build or amend a fairly sophisticated app just from a chatgpt session (well CodePilot if you want to be specific), so any sort of simple challenge might get worked around.

I can't imagine the spammers are getting many hits from their posts here so hopefully they won't bother taking any further action if the bar is raised even a tiny little bit

I've got no idea how these bots work or how AI tools could improve them but I've noticed that many of these spam users even set their avatars.

I doubt a simple question is going to stop them when any question simple enough for newbs can be easily searched.

Would be interesting to see

Yes you are right. It was suggested.

We were asked to post up possible questions.

I don't know if it was implemented.

One of the bots I reported bafore had managed to list an AK47 under guns owned so not sure where that puts a joining question? Unless we go with the classic what am bestest gnu?

That's interesting.   Tbh once I've identified someone trying to sell me Voodoo dick enlargement with a side-order of chemicals and a Scandinavian girl-friend thrown in for the smallest of fees, well once I've finished signing up for that I don't bother looking at anything else!

Was it one of those. or something a bit more 'targeted'?

Have new registrations been suspended @proffrink & @Jedi_Master?

No new members in the last 20 hours - testing on a different browser, I can't see a button to register.
