And then on the flip side I’ve got a pair of camogrom trousers and one of there smocks that I’ve absolutly battered over the 5+yrs I’ve had them and there both doing fine ,the trousers I have had to repair once when a seam burst ( but to be fair I did go arse over tit as I climbed over a barbwire fence ant the leg caught on it) so I’m perfectly happy with Helikon kit .

On the subject of ‘get what you pay for’ on quality brands , I've had a near £400 mountain hardware waterproof have a potentially life threatening catastrophic failure of the seam sealant on the top of Pen-y-fan in really nasty weather , in the space of 20mins well over 60% of the seams started leaking on it and it was 4mths old if that ? Luckily I’ve always been a “1 is none and 2 is 1” person so I had a lightweight packaway in my bergen so I was ok to get down off the mountain , but does shows ANY thing can fail no matter the price or manufacture . All your paying for really is a lesser chance it will fail due to better materials and more stringent QC ? Who knows ! 

You say that but I think this may be a case of older stock being better quality as a team mate also had a pair of helikon literally fall off him mid game due to stitching seemingly made out of cheese. Not uncommon for brands to either get better or get worse, look at some of the Airsoft brands, TMC for example used to be a complete crock of shit but now the QC seems to have improved and also the manufacturing processes, where as SEMAPO used to be top notch when they first appeared then the QC went down the toilet and their reputation followed.

5.11 do Grey kit as well.  A good tip if your on a budget, Arco Trojan work trousers, Blackrock Hardshell from e bay, hell even a Grey boiler suit.  You can always add a bit of velcro to style these up a bit.

The kit that was chosen was appropriate for the role....its worn for 12hrs a day every day has to be able to be used in all weathers and conditions ....it is expensive but it works ....and it's far far better than the original stuff that was given to Arvs and SFOs.....maybe do the job before criticising the choices

So why aren't serving soldiers issued with he same kit ?, that's a job I used to do, so I know all the same requirements are applicable, my point is that there's plenty of kit brands that would do the same job at considerably less cost, by your own admission it's stupidly expensive.

George, we're talking about trousers/tops/jackets, just because a guy is sco19 (as a good friend of mine is), doesn't mean he's gonna be more physical, or spend more time exposed to the elements, than many of his colleagues that work in so called "lesser" roles in the police, or any of the services for that matter.

 I'm most definitely not denigrating the roles of anybody, as a squaddie I detested the attitude of some guys who referred to everybody else as "craphats", in my mind it's all about teamwork across all forces & services, my only point was to question the absurd costs that are sometimes hard to justify.

my mate who's sco19 admits to some extremely wasteful "jollies" he's been on, including nearly a month in the West Indies as an advisor during a prison riot, 99% of the time he was pissing it up sitting by the pool working on his tan, all on full pay & expenses lol, all the while I was looking after his 14ft Burmese python, who wanted to eat me on one occasion, slippery git.

point is, some departments seem to get away financial "murder", while others can be found having to share kit.

It is a matter of scale; affordable to get top quality kit for specialist team as opposed to buying for the whole police force. The same way that the army does not buy Gucci kit for everyone, just a very small number who require it. Difference in 300 sets as opposed to 100,000. Approved companies offer government discounts, which is cheaper than a civvie will pay for the same kit.

The SFOs get the best kit it's always been that way within CO19 ...the ARVs are now catching up but only because quite rightly it was pointed out that they take the same risks and should have the same PPE ....its miserable being stuck in a containment position in the cold and rain in gear that doesn't keep you dry at least so it's a reasonable expectation to provide decent kit . The new kit and uplift was paid for from the CT budget so the rest of the force didn't suffer financially and the uplift Nationwide in Arv and CTsfos also came from that budget not directly from a policing budget ....Some of the kit choices forced upon officers conea from a very few making the decisions...sometimes that is a good thing many times it isn't.  Not trying to be a dick about it but having used old and new kit I know what's better when it's cold and raining and I have to kneel for any period of time ...maybe it's just my old bones 1?
