With respect... I've bought & sold rifs for similar prices & postage has never been more than £20.
That's with a trip to the post office or collection.

Sure, then add on paypal fees too, thats another £20-30 and youre already at the £50 discount.
You ssed to see "price not including paypal" on Zero One classifieds all the time back in ye olde days. I think they cracked down on that because it says somewhere in PP T&Cs youre specifically not allowed to do that. But fuck 'em
I dont think its entirely unreasonable to offer a discounted cash on collection price. The way I see it, its just like a tradesman offering a cash price discount rather than full price on card that HMRC can take a nibble at

Personally, I split the PayPal fees if I ever use G+S. Both parties benefit from the protections, so it's only fair that both sides pay for it.

Yeah, no, you see it wrong. That's for skipping VAT and corporation/income tax. Totally different when an individual is selling used airsoft guns, HMRC ain't seeing any of that.

Imo if a seller wants x amount and have the buyer cover pp fees then they should list it as whatever X plus the fees is. If the buyer doesn't want to use PayPal then consider it a bit of a bonus.
As others have already posted, postage charges sts shouldn't be any more than £20. PayPal fees are 2.9% which of £600 is £17 so yes the seller is taking the piss

Royal mail and pretty much every other courier offer doorstep collection or you can send parcels from local shops

I fail to see the merit in charging for time and effort by private sellers. I'm not paying for a professional shipping and packing service. Maybe some additional fee can cover packing materials but you need to be in a strong position of leverage.
When I sell items off Vinted or eBay, I'd be laughed off either site for saying I charge for the effort to list and pack an item, and travel to the post office.
If a post office has opening hours that don't suit the seller's working life, the world doesn't owe them understanding, nor does that warrant charging more for postage. Royal Mail among other residential couriers offer local pick up because they accomodate people living in remote areas, different working hours, those living with disability, carers, etc.
I've had bulky items with RIFs posted to me and it's similar bulk and weight. The most expensive consignment was £20 for shipping.
When I buy bulky items from continental Europe, I've never paid more than €30 for shipping.

You're taking a massive hit when you sell second hand, does it really matter?
Just list it for the price you can actually sell it for, then post it with the proper tracking and accept whats left.
If you're in a financial position where one days green fees spent on postage is a cost you can't write off then perhaps it might be time to consider a cheaper hobby.
The same goes for buying, who cares how they split the money either your sending a total amount you're happy to pay for the thing you're buying, or you dont buy it.
