For a WE l85A2 is there a picatinny / weaver rail alternative for fitting modern scopes or perhaps an adapter. I did see one for an ICS but dont know if its a compatible swap?

Cheers.

On the 3 WE SA80's I've owned over the years, every one of them had the receiver drilled and the ICS sight mount fitted instead. Opens you up to many more optic options and it's honestly a ten minute job

There are the dovetail to 20mm pic rails that people make. Across the brands, as far as i'm aware, all the dovetails are the same so the adapters should work.

1. AirsoftArtisan sells a nice metal one and a QD version if you want that.
2. EnglishKiwi sells a polymer rail replacement. I have one of these I can sell you if you're interested. I snagged a B&T one a while ago so I have no use for it.
3. AntSupplies sell one but it's the most expensive of the three.
4. B&T also have a trademarked rail but they're pretty hard to find now.

I have seen that ICS mount, but no idea about alignment before drilling and taping the top receiver. or in reality does it not need to be perfect and you take up any mis alignment with sight adjustment ?

It definitely does need to be straight haha
Another chap messaged me about this, this was my response;
  1. Remove your bolt carrier group
  2. Remove the WE dovetail which is held in by two screws
  3. Line up your ICS dovetail mount using the rear screw hole where the WE mount was, make sure it's straight. It always "looks" like it's slightly off set but just measure distance from side to side at the back, middle, front. When it's straight, mark the front with a paint pen or something similar
  4. Tap the hole to make a thread (if you don't have tap and die you can use a grub screw to make a thread but make sure it's 100% going in straight, very ghetto), if I remember correctly the WE uses an M4X6 screw for the dovetail so you'll need the equivalent die. Make sure that is the correct size though before proceeding
  5. I would recommend using blue loctite on both screws to be safe
