Wasn't there for it but another Marshal told me a player complained about a none hit taker that was a good 100m away because they had there optics cross hairs on the other player. The amount of times I have had to show players how to adjust their optics. I also see so many players aiming over their optics while holding the mag well instead of the vertical fore grip they have fitted. After 26ish years of playing and 15ish of Marshalling most airsofters are nice people but are complete numpties.

I didnt quite mean it in that much of an extreme.
More just pointing out that i can very easily sympathise with the statement given my experience has been more towards less effective marshalling.

I'm pretty sure we have the same local, funnily enough.
There was a guy a couple months ago with an HPA setup, and the top of his gun was completely bare. No optics, no iron sights. I asked him and it and he said, "I just walk the BBs in."
Okay, typical Ghostbuster but I'll leave him to it. Except during the final game he starts yelling at the other team to call their hits. "I've definitely hit you! Bunch of terminators out there." Raging and raging.
Chatted to the marshalls on our side of the field and said he's not got any aiming aids so I don't think he's actually hitting. One of the marshals had a sniper for test shots, and she went off and found out it was actually him shrugging the hits.
He was gone before the next game started, haha.

tbf, you can do pretty good work without sights when you put some effort into it.
done it a couple of times, once borrowing pretty much exactly the kind of hpa rig you described and despite it being more a bugfixing session i was able to get it to work for me.
second time was much more fun, rolling round with a mosin missing its front sight, some of the shots i was landing frankly i didn't quite believe were happening but you can't deny it when the hand goes up. mag shredded the skin off my thumb though (said with an unfortunate lack of hyperbole)
of course as you say there'll be the one with a nominally stacked gun (optics or no) who doesn't know how to set a hop unit and has a bad time.
with all that said and granted that as often as not the accusations come from people who's faith in their abilitys/gear to make a hit is unfounded, there are absolutely the cases beyond doubt where you can see the round make its mark, hear the thwack and know it landed with authority only for there to be no hit call. of course how a marshall might distinguish between them with any confidence is a question i can't answer.

That's a very common tactic and whilst the vast majority of players have either iron or dot sights a significant number don't seem to use them
