So I'm still waiting on my laptop, but I thought I'd offer up a link to the specs I've ended up with:
http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-x550ldv-xo552h-intel-core-i7-4500u-8gb-1tb-15-6--windows-8-1-9LTH.html
The processor named in the specs is an i7-4510u but I'm pretty sure mine will come with the 4500u (which is also in the URL and top of the page - if it's the 4500 I'm getting 1.8ghz instead of 2.0ghz) though I'm not sure that will have a huge impact for my purposes.
I've paid a total of about £500 for it through a company I work with, online I found it in various places ranging from online catalogues to amazon and a price range of £580-800 (which demonstrates a wild degree of cheekiness on the part of certain retailers).
I've also splurged for one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/SteelSeries%C2%A0Diablo-III-Mouse-PC-Mac/dp/B005L38QK2/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1407188939&sr=1-1&keywords=steel+series+diablo
Which I know is probably overpriced for being in association with Diablo 3 (which I have never and don't ever intend to play), but I cant help myself when I see pretty things.
I'm also going to pick up a set of these for use when gaming:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Marshall-Major-Headphones-Mic-Black/dp/B00590GH8K/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1407251805&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=marshall+major
Theyre not built for gaming, but they're beautiful, hard-wearing and my last pair gave awesome sound quality - only ending their life when they fell into the hands (or should that be paws?) of Oscar The Destroyer. So for £50 they'll do me fine for gaming/general use around the house unless I can find some prettier wireless headphones for the same price.
