I work near a barracks. We've had some dealings with the current QM there, and a couple prior. Crooked as the day is long. Stuff "gets lost" all the time. 
The last one had trucks "Go missing". Latest guy isn't much better, I hear.

Gear still in the packaging , put a nice bundle together must have been clocking 300?’s worth retail , asked how much he said 200 so I came back with “200 ? that’s a bit steep does Lizzie know you’ve been raiding her store cupboard ?” . “Tell ya what call it a ton and I won’t have a clue where or when I bought it all , work for you ?” AND he just grinned and said “sounds like a deal to me !”? like I said 90% of squaddies will have the fillings out of your teeth if they think they could flog em ! ???

Given the pay and conditions, and that the "Armed Forces Covenant" is three empty words that mean absolutely nothing to anybody with an ounce of power of influence, I can't say that I blame them.

It's the taxpayer picking up the tab, but in the context of MOD typists getting gibsed £60K for claiming carpal tunnel hurties while squaddies get a couple of grand for having a hand blown off (and only if they can prove it was their wanking hand), I can't say that I begrudge it that much.
