As old age is starting to catch up with me I've decided I need to swap to a magnifying optic for my AEG and I'm thinking of an acog. Are there any recommended brands or any to avoid? Or is it a case of they're all about the same and not getting a lemon depends on whether the airsoft gods are smiling on me or not?

Also if there's anything similar but better I'm open to suggestions

I've had quite a few - the eye relief on every one I've had has been poor, however the G&P one is/was the best by a decent measure.

I have an evolutiongear and a specprecision, both of them are problematically dark compared to repros of other optics.

I have a trijicon as well and obviously it's better, but it's expensive.

If it still fits your vibe, then eg and holy warrior both do elcan spectre repros that are passable, but there is a bit of zero shift between the 1 and 4x magnification settings

Evolution gear hands downs for an acog, clear glass, lovely rugged build, it looks “proper” and they’re not THAT expensive

Still has the typical ACOG issue of eye relief but I find you get used to it quite quickly

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't realise the acogs in general aren't great, in that case I'll have a look at alternatives.

Those do look nice but the point of aim moving between magnifications does does sound like it could cause problems. I did find this as a possible work round though

Be aware that website isn’t legit, they’re a drop shipper with stupid prices for shipping

Also as it wasn’t mentioned elcans are hefty optics, even the replicas and will definitely add some weight to your rifle

Have you considered something like a T2 aimpoint replica with a flip to side magnifier?
A friend had this set up for a while on a replica spuhr mount and it was honestly quite comfortable. It gave x3 magnification but it wasn’t a bad sight picture surprisingly. I think he got the entire set up from AliExpress for quite cheap
Thank you for the warning. I thought I'd heard of them but couldn't remember where from. I'll keep looking elsewhere

Have you considered an LVPO instead? Spend the money on something like a Vortex Crossfire 1-4x. The eye box is good, the magnification is fine over Airsoft ranges and the lifetime VIP warranty is excellent.

I don't know if a lot of the chinese optic brand names aren't just the same objects with different stickers; unless someone bought batches of all of them at the same time and knew when they were manufactured, then there's not much of a way to be certain. That plus they update their stuff now and then. Oh and as always the QA is all over the shop so anecdotal examples are no guarantee either way.

I got one of these about a year ago and it's great, but hey who knows maybe I just got lucky.

Also have another TA31 under the EG brand from 6mm a bit before that, again very nice. Got a TA02 from AliEx with no brand name which is very good, but a bunch of the stores on there were all selling the exact same one as per usual (also the only replica I've ever seen), hence my initial statement.

As discussed here, ACOGs are usually the lightest option by a good margin, ELCANs offer a greater FOV though. I don't know if my guns all just suck but I'm pretty sure most AEGs are minute-of-cow at their max range (and not exactly great at closer ranges), so anything but the most egregious zero shift with a 4x doesn't bother me in the slightest. Even then if it was consistent you just memorise what happens. Longer optics vary massively on every factor and need a good bit of careful research.

Vortex definitely are a great choice practically given the warranty, just depends if you want the military look of a replica of something specific or not.

All I can add is... sometimes an elcan is the 'look' regardless of the quality.
Of course. We all know airsoft is at least 50% a fashion show. I might even go with the original eclan

I had but LPVO scopes are quite modern and I want something with more of a 2000s vibe to it. I'm not trying to do a specific loadout though so I'll consider anything from that era. Also thinking about it I don't think I'll need variable magnification

That's what I'd always assumed
From what I've read online they're highly thought of.
