Making a gun look like new?

I have a DE M50/UTG M324/Swiss Army M6 and it's in terrible condition on the externals. LOADS of scratches on the stock/body and paint coming off of the barrel/bolt and rail assembly. How can I make it look like new?

Probably stupid idea but

Sand it down with about 50grit - 250grit then repaint?

Help please

Or will repainting get rid of the scratches?

id sand it to remove all the old paint and smooth then couple of thin layers of primer and then paint useing thin even layers to avoid drips etc. obviously any trades will be covered unless they are engraved. would also say to strip it down and remove the internals for the best results

If you sand it down properly and use primer before painting you should be able to sort all the scratches. If you have any particularly bad ones you might need filler.

tbh i cant see it having scratchs deep enough to require filler (unless you have a proper crack in the bodywork) but try the primers that include filler in it.

i refurbed some alloy wheels a while back and as you can imagine they have scratchs chips etc of various sizes and all the ones that seem like they would end up on a gun from normal use were hidden surprisingly well by just the primer filler stuff only the proper damage (where someone had obviously scraped a kerb) required filler

I used fine sandpaper then 000 wire wool then 0000 wire wool and it came up brillient

Yeah I was going to recommend that filler/primer spray paint. You just sand it with fine grit and it hides anything that you'd call a scratch. To be deep enough to be too much for it you'd call it a gouge or something!

That said OP, some beat up guns seem to have a lot of character. I'm wondering if you'd post pics of this thing so we can see what it looks like as is. If for no other reason, it will serve as a before which you can add an after to once you've done whatever you decide.

At hand I have only 250grit sandpaper, my 1000grit is used...

Will 250grit be fine enough to sand the gun down? I also have stopping paste (gets my Mora Clipper shaving hairs ..)

that'll polish it, as it's also for bike exhausts, etc.

What do I need to repaint it (OD) What does the primer do? and after it's painted how can I protect that?

After a paint will you see any scratches? They are not very bad but this gun has seen alot of games.

The bolt assembly has some paint chipped off as well as the rails. Including bipod rails.

I've recently found that EdGi makes replacement and upgrade parts for this gun

This gun has a 6.14mm barrel!

Upgrades are going to be a must, as it's also slam firing, haven't tried to fix it yet, will crack it open tomorrow.

well if you get the normal primer it just gives a nice base for the paint to stick to (if you get the filler primer it will fill out any any light imperfections on the gun)

for paint i would go for the halfords camo range i used it a while back and it was pretty good they have a small range of colours od,khaki etc.

normally to protect paintwork you would use a clear laquer however this gives a shiney finish so tbh i would just leave it as long as you dont drag the thing through the ground the only bits of paint that should wear are the places you put your hands.
