M249 Vrs L86

Yeah been doing a lot of research regarding known faults and fixes etc

I have a lot of time as I am still waiting for stock to arrive in the uk :(

I might just order it from HK at this rate :(

So, what one did you decide, A&K M249 Mk2 ?
to be honest i leaning towards the a&K m249 para as it comes with a ris optic rail, but they seeem to be out of stock with affordable retailers   .

so i bought a G&G GR-25

Nice gun.

I still like your original concept of a support weapon, so Im still looking at M60 and M249s.

Im in no hurry though. Cant quite justify a GP as nice as they are. They have to come back in stock at some point.

i love it, and if i am honest its a replacement for my snow wolf sniper, which i may be getting rid off soon™ ;)

i am still looking out for one... but i am gunna wait till i see a deal on one now :D

or i may just order one from a HK retailer etc, but i am in no rush.

i wouldn't go with the G&P (nice as they are), as they cannot take STANAG mags, where are the CA and A&K can ;)

To be fair they look ridiculous with stanags anyway so I would consider that a plus :D

Its the box mag that attracts me rather than a stanag.

Does anybody know the difference between the A&K M249 Mk1 and Mk2 ?

true but if out have a box mag failure, the stanag option is nice ;)

I guess, but then equally the only reason you would buy an LMG is for the box mag pretty much, if you intend on using stanags, you'd be better off with a more accurate and better performing assault rifle.

As it stands you ended up with an SR25 so it's all irrelevant anyway :P

that's true, i was only thinking worst case "out in the field" scenario ;) as is all other cases there would be time for a fix or replacement of the box mag etc

ill still get 249 B)

the SR is to replace my spring sniper B) and with only 341 fps i wont have to apply a min engagement distance :D :D :D

The STANAG bit is just useful if your box mag decides not to feed or runs out

As for the difference in the Mk1 and Mk2. IN real steel M249s this doesn't work as there's not actually such thing as a Mk2 its a M249 PIP and actually all the furniture on the "Mk2" can be put on a Mk1 as most of the changes were very minor or were internal

However, in airsoft terms...... The MK1 is the first M249 and is nearly exactly the same as a FN Minimi. It has not heat shield on top of the handguard, the handguards don't have rails and are straight. The barrel is an older design, the carry handle is fixed and the stock is the not retractable metal one. Its basically just an older M249

The MK2 is the replacement for the MK1. The carry handle can be folded, there's a heat shield, the grip is more ergonomic, more modern barrel/flashhider and the stock is plastic fixed stock in the design of the M240Bs,

OK detailed answer - thank you for taking the trouble to explain it.

what annoys the hell out of me, is why is it that only the para that has the ris optic rail as standard

I believe the L86is a good support unas long as you get the LSW edition and drum mags

You are aware the L86 and LSW are EXACTLY the same gun, theres no LSW edition... also don't get me started on putting box mags on a non support gun, it it was designed to have box mags they would be on the real thing...

I believe its because in real life it was the only model out of the Mk1 Mk2 and Para to be new enough to have the rails as standard. They were added onto the Mk2 as part of the Soldier Enhancement Program and Rapid Fielding Initiative not with the PIP

There were actually box mags made for them, they just weren't used much/at all or something. He may have meantto say l85, then the lsw version of that tthat'd make more sense :)

yes around 200 were made but they were never more than a test because there isn't a quick change barrel so if you used the drum mag there was a high chance of the barrel warping under the heat

Also the fact that at the time in the mid 1980s, they were priced at about £250 per magazine. Which was about 3/4s of the price of the LSW they were meant for, so you can see why the idea issuing (several) drum-mags to each LSW gunner was quietly dropped.
