How do shotguns work?

hi,

I just realised that i have no real idea how airsoft shotties work! I know how the spring ones work just like any other spring airsoft gun but what i don't know are the gas ones that take shells.

The main questions are; is the gas in the shells and what happens to the shells after they've shot, a`re they ejected on the floor or do you pocket them to use again?

best thing to do is to find out how real shotguns work first as im sure they are similar designs

i know how real ones work but with a real one you cannot re-use the shell and they're not gas,
