Brushless motors

Hi guys, I'm building a new AEG but it's been like 10 years since I've done anything with one. It's going to be a 1.1J build and with up to a 16" barrel.

Brushless motors seem to be the hot new thing. Are they worth the jump in price over a regular motor? I saw someone (I think it was Neg) mention that you don't really need one of you're also getting a perun. 

Also helical gears, how much of a difference do they actually make?

Not sure their advantages in Airsoft as like you I've been out of it 10 years so catching up my self. But I can say brushless motors will definitely run a bit better with more torque and in a slightly lighter package, it's like the move in power tools from brushed to brushless, 20 years ago brushless drills where a niche on the market but their potential was soon realised and within 10 years they took over. 

I imagine in Airsoft they'll offer fewer advantages as end of the day lower torque motors aren't the end of the day.

I remember back nearly 20 years ago now my dad making a big deal about the new brushless motors for his RC planes. Obviously for that having a lighter motor is a huge improvement

Yea definitely was a game changer for RC aircraft. So much lighter than a nitro set up and more effective than brushed motors.

There's a few brushless motors on the market now, some are wank and some actually work well. The better ones have ESCs that will work with airsoft ETUs properly, are way more efficient than brushed motors (so less battery drain) and in most cases offer far higher torque at a given RPM. The good ones are still expensive though so if you're fitting an ETU anyway you can usually get away with a decent brushed motor.

That's exactly the information I was after, thanks! Last time I built an AEG the ASG cnc30k and gate titan was about the most advanced thing you could put in your gun. What counts as a "decent" motor these days?

Funny you should say that, I have the same motor and a Titan in one of my builds! If you want the ASG/Ultimate motors are still good, if you don't want to spend that much on a brushed motor then the XT motors from @ak2m4 are good https://www.ak2m4.co.uk/internal-parts/motors-parts/xt-high-torque-motor-28tpa-long-fan

Brushless wise, I have one Solink Lite, one XT Brushless and a couple of Warhead motors. The Warheads are good, but I would say wait for the new ones from Redux and see what price point they're at if you want to go that way. The Solink is good but not as efficient as I would like from a brushless motor.

But what brushless motor is best for compatibility with a 13.1 gearset and a gate aster would you say that is also quite and efficient?

I have a warhead base 27k brushless motor in my Gate Aster/13:1 gear set in my MP5. 
 

It didn’t increase the rate of fire by much but the pistol grip stays cool, it’s snappier on the trigger and much more efficient.  Pre brushless motor I had to change battery to get through the day and it now plays a whole day on 1 battery.

They have faster motors and more expensive high spec versions as well but this got me to 27 rps which is more than enough for my requirements.

I now have two RIF's running brushless, both 27k warheads. One is in my G3 stumpy and one is in my P90. 

(one was in my AUG but its not well at the moment and i thought i'd have a change up) 

One of the better moves in my tinkering career. I made a thread up where i was very much on the fence, like yourself. Have to say, i like the speed, longevity and the fact that it has more technology in it than the rest of the rif.  

Especially handy in the P90 as theres bugger all space for a battery and now ive added the M4 mag adapter, its effectively a support weapon...
