Hi folks,

As the title says, I've been away from Airsoft for a long time but am looking at getting back into it. Used to be I'd just go on Arnie's Airsoft but was shocked to find it had closed.

Anyway, seems like everything has changed, some brands I recall being regarded as the mutt's nuts I see reviews and feedback online saying they now suck, so it's all very confusing.

Long story short, I am looking for something fairly specific

- Based on a RS .300 Blackout chambered PDW style firearm
- Prefer metal body unless the real deal is polymer
- Licensed Trademarks
- As compact as possible; ARP style short barrel and handguard; the kind of thing you could have under a jacket on a one-point sling.
- I would really like a sliding stock similar in style to the classic MP5 slider where it'll go quite close up to the pistol grip when compacted
- Prefer under £400 - I don't mind needing to swap out some external parts to get what I'm after though (shorter barrel/handguard, stock change etc.)

I've looked at a few possibilities:

SIG MCX Rattler
-------------------
So this would probably be ideal in many ways, particularly with the collapsible stock design available for the platform (more compact than the M4-style buffer tube stocks) but there are a few potential problems.

The official SIGAir versions appear to be made by VFC, which when I was in airsoft before was a well-regarded company, but I've seen quite a few comments of buyer's remorse over these VFC MCX models as having some design flaws and quality issues, as well as being thought of as "overpriced" for what they are. They are also a bit outside my preferred budget.

Then there's the E&C MCX Rattler. I know next to nothing about E&C so I've no idea what I'm dealing with in terms of quality, only that I understand from my research that what they offer is a cheaper clone of the VFC which has fixed many of the design and build issues. Price wise they are much more in my preferred territory. There is some issue of availability of my preferred model though, as the 6.5in seems readily available in the UK, I note there is a shorter 5in version available overseas but have not seen any UK supplier.

Most version of the Rattler seem to come with a side-folding stock, so I would have to source the sliding stock from one of the larger models, I've seen this is available seperately though it is quite expensive.

EMG Daniel Defense DDM4 PDW
-------------------------------------
I might have the wrong end of the stick but my understanding is that EMG is affiliated in some way with ICS, which in my memory was quite a well regarded brand, and that it uses CYMA Platinum internals on this model (which is weird because I remember CYMA being the King of cheap Chinese clone brands, but again, times have changed).

DDM4 PDW ticks most of my boxes, the only thing I'm wondering is if the stock collapses as far as I'd like (looks like a mini buffer tube?) and whether I could get a shorter front-end on there.

Ares AM-014-BK Short Honey Badger
-----------------------------------------
Another 180-degree flip on what I remember, Ares was a top tier brand as I recall but I've seen a few reviews online saying they are not so hot these days. Again, it's all hearsay to me, I really don't know what to believe. Anyway, similar to the DDM4 PDW although it has a polymer body (upgrade available?) and again I'm not sure if the stock when collapsed is compact enough.

Anyway, thanks for reading all that, and thanks in advance to anyone who replies. Generally any advice, tips, suggestions are most welcome.

Personally, if I buy a VFC AEG it's for the externals and I'm prepared for meh internals that might need a ton of money spending on them to get nice. They did just release some Maxim branded tiny AEGs that will be within your realms of interest. I think the general consensus is that E&C are decent overall, not amazing, not terrible; that's been my own experience having had a couple.

EMG is just an evike re-brand umbrella, you've got to dig in to the product description to figure out what brand you are actually buying. Obviously CYMA is well liked, that DD will have normal upper receiver threads I'm sure so you could fit whatever outer barrel and handguard you like. Your list of wants means you've got a narrow amount of options, so if you find something with real/licensed trades on the receiver that say 300Blk then be prepared to modify that gun to get exactly what you want. It seems a tad counter-intuitive to me because you're then making a gun that doesn't actually exist real world and remember your battery is always going to have to go somewhere (unless you're happy with a PEQ battery box).

I'd never buy an Ares myself and I think most people would echo that advice, just no point when they're so spotty and other brands are objectively a better choice. PTS is scheduled to make an actual replica of the proper Q Honey Badger, but that'll be a good way off yet.

Thanks for this. I take your point about VFC, I wouldn't mind that approach generally but a lot of the negative stuff I've seen about the SIGAir/VFC MCX specifically is that elements of the exterior build are a bit dodgy.

I get what you're saying about a gun that "doesn't actually exist" but I mean we're mainly talking about switching out stocks and fore-ends which, when it comes to personal customised guns isn't a massive leap IMO. Battery wise I'm quite happy to come up with an external solution whether that's a sling or PEQ box or something else.

Usually VFCs are the nicer option externally, but as with every brand there's always the odd exception; or indeed lemon.

If even the DD PDW has too long of a front end and stock for ya, I don't think there's anything that will be exactly what you want out of the box, but obviously these are mostly AR based AEGs so easy to change both. The Double Eagle and VFC Maxim PDXs are close on form factor but wrong markings.

Another possible option for a base:

You can also buy any blank gun and look up West Laser who will put on any trades you want, but he ain't cheap so that whole notion likely won't fit your current budget in one go.

Dunno if my opinion counts as I collect more than I play but...

I have a HoneyBadger & any issues I've had with it were due to the total cock ups done by the bedroom tech I bought it from, nothing a new gearbox couldn't fix & tbh it was sourced pretty easily from abroad. The biggest complaint I hear about ares is the lack of parts availability but not in my experience. There are Honey Badgers advertised sporadically in the classifieds but not often.

Sig Rattler... personally I don't like it's looks, mainly the sliding stock, if I bought one i'd fit a folding stock imediately as I like the MCX looks, litterally just bought my first MCX this week and my only critique is the hand guard style is jaggy , a few rail covers will fix that. I see a lot of rattlers advertised so there's either a ton of them out there or players decide they don't like them.

As for the DDM4, to me it's a bit meh, again I don't like the stock & Im not keen on the front end either... if I wanted a short AR15 PDW/SMG I'd get a Colt 9mm SMG & I did.

But I'm a tart... I go for looks more than content, long term use & playability are a mystery to me.

What about an MP5 or MP5K? they're a classic & modern at the same time and customisable.

I wouldn't say it's definitely too long, I'm just not 100% sure, I've seen dimensions for the overall length both collapsed and extended, but can't find anything about how compact the stock itself is when collapsed. Anyway, I've got a bit to think about and will mull it over further.

Appreciate the suggestions mate, but I'm definitely wedded to the idea of a .300 BLK AR platform ever since I've seen videos of the real-deal being virtually movie-quiet when suppressed (you can literally hear the bolt over the shot report). It might seem silly but we all have our reasons for why we become attached to certain features of certain guns, even if they don't translate into Airsoft practically :)

The king arms pdw is pretty good I've got one and like it allot. It's sort of like a M4 but takes mp5 mags. It is polymer but I personally prefer polymer nice and lightweight
