A while ago I picked up some stuff from a "retiring" player and as it turns out, most of it was pretty much fubar.
Included in this was an Ares 021 M4.
I finally get around to sitting at my bench and having a good look at the stuff and testing it. Now I know I should have tested it beforehand but hey. That's me. 😁

So the ak47 behemoth turned out to be devoid of wires and selector stuff and the m4 didn't disappoint with a knackered micro switch inside the gearbox.

Not sure that ares expected it to last considering it's rated at 15A (230v but AC, not DC) So that will be getting replaced with a new one that's attached to a mosfet with bigger balls. 👍

Inside the v2 wasnt too hideous but a 270mm barrel with a full cylinder may have been a tad over volumed so I think something longer and shiney-er will be on the shopping list.
The missing bits and loose bits are being replaced and tightened up.

Which brings me to my question....
I don't own a DMR. I've fancied one and never gotten around to actually making one.
So am I correct in my assumption that a heavier piston would be better?
As I have it in bits to do shimming and what have you, I can change parts as I go along. The original is plastic so would die quickly I feel.

What are your thoughts oh give mind?

Ah. Might as well carry on with it as I have it in component form on the bench.
😁
So ares in their ultimate wisdom used a micro switch for the trigger. Seems fair I suppose but one that's rated at 15A AC.

Now a few years ago I did some electronics stuff and came across 3 phase braked motors that used dc but their contacts weren't rated for dc, causing all sorts of fun and games.
Same thing here. The micro switch was pretty much toast. No mosfet, no fancy fire control, just a switch that's gonna get beaten to death by your average airsofter. 🤣
So I bought a switch only for it to be the wrong polarity. Damn thing was normally closed not normally open.
Set about trying to swap some bits over and ended up with a pile of bits that used to be a micro switch!
So fiddly. Oh my God, so fiddly. Got it back together eventually and it now identifies as normally open. Yay.

I'll be buying a cheapy mosfet so it can live its life in low current happiness.

Seems they're used in microwaves too, cos when I was searching for the model number of the switch (vms15) I was getting all sorts! Ranging from £3 to £30!!

That's today's job sorted. I'm off to stare at something in the far distance as my eyes are locked in macro...🤣🤣

In fairness, it was in a bundle of stuff i bought in a job lot kinda thing. If i'd known it was ares, id have left it there..... :D

Although every image of the ares ar021 I can find it's this stumpy little thing. Not this honking great lump I have laid out on the bench. I guess the suppressor is nearly a foot long. Weird what some people do to their rifs, isn't it? Ah well.
I'll put the gearbox back together tomorrow at work (quiet day I hope!) and see what it looks and sounds like.

Give me a long gun, I'll make it cqb, short guns, ill stick a massive 🐓 extension on it 🤣

Yeah, thats the one. I'm missing the "extension" piece but i imagine it would need a ridiculous barrel at that point! :D

Wonder if a normal v2 will fit. The trigger turned out to have a crack and sheared off. Oh dear.
Game over for the ares gearbox.
