I love my vfc hk416 A5 such a fun great gun. Very reliable in spring summer weather not used it in winter yet so can't comment on the cold weather performance yet. I would highly recommend vfc platform as they are well built and parts are easily acquired.Without going into too much detail, aegs and hpa aren’t doing it for me anymore. My question to you is what GBBR would you pick up as a gas novice and why ?
I see a lot of good thing mentioning the salvo precision Mcx series apparently they are based on the DE Mws clones, they seem like a candidate tbh but as I say I’m a novice with gas guns, I rarely even bother with a gbb pistol most of the time. I’ve seen that the Mws mags are different, real shame but could the feed lips be changed out to the older ones? The EMG/Double Eagle Noveske N4 is pretty decent out of the box as a lower cost alternative to TM's MWS. There are a lot of interchangeable parts from TM and third parties. There are also DD MK18, Ghetto Blaster and Aeroknox replicas DE has done that friends of mine rave on about. The only thing to bear in mind is that the latest batch of TM mags have varied feeding compatibility because of the lips being made slightly differently. The GM and Modify Tech mags would suit you better. DE's stanag style mags are OK as well. Just don't by the D/P-mags. They run quite well in the winter, especially when they run lightweight bolts and/or use red or black gas. Some may need a bit of tinkering with an NPAS fitted to make them site legal.
Tbh I run mainly m4s right now so probabbly would be looking mainly at those platforms, there’s just so much info on what brand and system is bestAny one that takes your fancy, I started with a Scar-H from the classifieds (chicks dig scars). I don't buy GBBR's as a rule but I don't play often so the cost of mags doesn't usually bother me, having said that... I recently got a WE GBBR L85A2 primarily as I had plenty of mags already because I got a WE XM177 a while ago.
I'd suggest you buy a 'popular brand' if you play often, as parts and mags would be more accessable. VFC & TM mags are often for sale in the classifieds which could save a few £££.
If you already have AEG's why not look for a GBBR version of your preferred pew?

I think I’m gonna have to scratch the itchWhilst playing using a gbbr is “hard mode” there is nothing more satisfying
If you are wanting to stay with M4/AR style replicas, there are plenty to choose from. TM, GHK, VFC all make very useable replicas for most climate conditions, but as you will be aware cold temps do need a little bit of consideration for playing in.

I do take an aeg as a backup with me to game days, but to date it has stayed in the bag and never come out

What a reply, this makes for amazing readingHere's a run through of my own thinking/experiences when I was getting started with the MWS options.
Guns
Double Eagle / Salvo Precision MWS - all are solid options and the cheapest reliable entry point into GBBRs. Fit and finish is excellent and rivals more expensive guns. Steel trigger group unlike the TM. UK models may come with a shorter inner barrel to get them down to 1j (my MK18 did, my Ghetto Blaster did not).
Pick the one you like the look of the most at the price that suits, internals are all comparable (though the MCX has a different bolt design). High compatibility with Tokyo Marui parts so upgrade options are plentiful (though there are subtle differences in nozzles and mag fitment).
Double Eagles original P-Mag was a disaster, but their newer Stanag (which is the default on most of their range now) is comparable in performance to a TM mag.
Original TM MWS - if you want the absolute easiest experience with maximum aftermarket support. Most models Cerakoted so close to real steel finish. Designed to run on lower power 144A gas, Green gas can cause breakage of the nozzle spring, but it's a cheap part and an upgraded spring is less than a £10 and an easy job to fit. Avoid their MK18 as their odd barrel nut is very difficult to remove - if you want a MK18 you may as well go with the Double Eagle as it uses a standard barrel nut.
In the end I went with a Double Eagle MK18, followed shortly after by my Ghetto Blaster. Under £700 spent for two guns I really liked seemed like a good deal.
Essentials
Gas - I only use ASG UltraAir for two simple reasons, it's silicone free and it's cheap in bulk at FireSupport. Don't listen to anyone who claims you want green gas with silicone oil in it. Gas guns should be cleaned and lubricated by hand in the places they need lubricant (it's a 5 min job), not have oil blasted into the breach every time the mag releases gas. 6 cans will set you back about £36 from FireSupport. As we're heading into winter you may need to buy higher pressure gas to cope with the lower temps.
Speedloader and adapter - GBBR mags are hard to load and you have to do it more frequently. A speed loader adapter is really a non negotiable, Jaeger Precision does an MWS and Guns Modify version for about £10 each.
If you don't already have a decent speed loader, now is the time to get one. Ultimately I spent £100 on an EMG Autobot as I value convenience over money, but an Odin is also a good choice.
Extra mags - Stating the obvious, but at 35rds per mag you're going to need more to get through a game. A minimum load for me is 4 but I typically carry 6, so on you're going to be spending another £150 here at least.
Grease - GBBRs need regular maintenance, buy some decent grease and do a field strip, clean and re-grease every couple of games or so.
Worthwhile Upgrades
NPAS - At some point you're going to need to adjust your power output.
Laylax/Waldo hop arm - the stock MWS hop unit is decent, but the arm is a plastic lever and the max I could hop with my Double Eagle was a .32. The upgraded alloy arm is more consistent and can hop higher weights.
Heavier ammo - as you'll be shooting less, you can afford to spend more on heavier ammo to take advantage of the above two upgrades. I'm working my way through my remaining .28s but I'm going to go to .36s or above.
Optics - with limited ammo each shot needs to count, so a reliable and clear optic is worth having.
New barrel - not really essential, but if your gun comes with a shorter barrel you may want to upgrade. My MK18 came with a pistol length barrel to hit 1j and my OCD couldn't cope with that so I had to spend an extra £40 for a full length Unicorn barrel.
LBE - easily forgotten, but you're now going to be lugging around heavy mags and more of them, gas, speed loader, adapter, basic tools - you might need some extra pouches or a more supportive rig.
Game Day
Setup - It will take you twice as long as usual until you get practiced. Hop adjustments are more of a faff so you'll need more time on the range before the game to get dialled in. You'll need to be ready to adjust your NPAS if needed to get through chrono. If you don't have an NPAS, bring some .2s with you as that might be the max weight you can run without joule creep.
Manual of arms - It's not complicated, but there is more to do with a GBBR and in the heat of a game it's easy to get muddled during reloads or dealing with jams. Practice at home, a bit of muscle memory will make your game day much easier. You don't need to be John Wick, but you don't want to be Mr Tumble either.
Recoil - it's not exactly strong, but if you're used to an inert lump like an AEG/HPA gun you'll need to actively brace the gun a bit more while shooting.
Play your own game - you will be outgunned by all the AEGs on your typical skirmish who can spam the trigger like a budgie at a mirror, but most airsofters would likely lose a battle of wits with the budgie; since you are now part of the GBBR master race, you'll have no trouble out manoeuvring them.
I think I’m gonna have to scratch the itchthe more I watch about them the more I’m drawn in, would you recommend just getting a prebuilt one or is half the fun buying a brand new out the box and doing it yourself ?

I’ve seen that the Mws seems to be the gold standard, I’ve seen a few Vfcs on the field a few times and my god do some of them look the mutts nutts. Gonna be an expensive few weeks for me I thinkEverybody highly rates the TM MWS, personally I found it quite a boring platform to use. Performance was... eh and the lack of recoil didn't do it for me.
I'm more of a VFC fan boy at this point as every VFC I own is lovely, kicks decently for a toy pew and overall the performance has been great on them all (Except the FAL initially)
The only downside to VFC is there's not much on offer for "Modern" AR's unlike the TM MWS which you can build just about anything from
Check you get the V2, they updated it to a steel bolt after breakages on the V1.What a reply, this makes for amazing readinglikely going for a salvo Mcx so most of this is definately relevant so thank you for all the info very much appreciated
