Seems like "Airsoft-Hub" is back from the dead after they shut it down because they couldn't handle the scammers

Interested to see what's changed and how it will be different going forwards 🤔

Seems like they want people to eventually pay to be a "trusted seller", doubt that would deter scammers though really?

Hopefully do more regarding scammers than "Used Airsoft" which is fuck all.....

In his defence, he did more about scammers than Used Airsoft. The problem wasn't just scammers, there was a lot of abuse on the site by dickheads trying to turn it to a shock site.

From a quick look there's fuck all difference.

You have to verify yourself to be able to post a listing
so eventually sellers will just have to pay to verify in order to be able to sell

depends what the cost to verify will be
potentially a small price to pay for the ability to scam people easier - cause now you're "verified"

Looks like you can report listings and users. I would hope, if found to be dodgy/scammers, then that would result in account bans
then they just have to pay to verify again, i guess?
since they "don't store veriication details", what's to stop them using the same id to repeatedly sign up and "verify"?

Lol, they've got one verified seller, if you fancy a road trip to Basingstoke 🤦🏼‍♂️

Judging by the use of AI content in their FB posts
I'm thinking the new website might be a little "vibe-coded"
Certainly has a off-feeling to it, but maybe that's because it's a different layout etc than the old one 👀

Side note: Real funny how everything went from
"oooh use all this AI to enhance your content"
to
"nah, AI bad, we're gonna need to make sure you know this was AI, see we're cool"

Excatly, they will just pay it to gain trust,

Yes agreed, Previous Airsoft hub actually tried do something about scammers, where as I meant Used Airsoft does absolutely nothing, about the multiple adverts on there, on a daily basis

The underlying issue of trust for online classifieds is really only resolved by legal enforcement (ebay, vinted) or by tying accounts to reputation and longevity (every forum based classifieds ever).

I appreciate that there are user experience reasons for creating a dedicated classifieds site but I've never understood why you'd bother: they're always going to be really hard to police and a huge target for scammers.

This is a 100% unbiased opinion, naturally.

Owner of Airsoft Hub here *waves*.

Firstly, I apologise about the AI social media post - design is not one of my skills, even the original Airsoft Hub was a templated design that I bought. My background is in developing software, not making things look pretty (so it's not vibe-coded, a lot of it is the original code base still, just brought up to date). I see a ton of AI airsoft posters on Facebook which seem to be accepted - so I thought it would be okay. That's my bad. If any designers want to suggest improvements, i'm all ears.

As for what's different...

As mentioned verification is the main thing, verification requires a gov-issued ID to be checked by a 3rd party (Stripe). This means that someone does scam someone, or is a general nightmare, they’ll be banned for life and they can’t create another account. Yes, there’s a cost to it, but that’s because they charge me to do so. I don't see/ store your data and the process is done completely by a 3rd party. I tried SMS/ Social account approvals on the old site, but they weren't enough of a deterrent to stop people creating scam accounts.

Also as a seller, if the buyer has also been through the verification process, they will have a marker if they're over 18, so you have peace of mind you're not selling RIFs to underage people. (A lot of people did these checks anyway, but that data was then shared via Airsoft Hub or WhatsApp etc which is even less secure).

Another approach the scammers took was impersonating Airsoft Hub staff and sending out links trying to get people to pay. There’s now automated checks for links (not AI driven, rule based regex checking etc.), an official Airsoft Hub account which is introduced to all members, and warning banners if you get messages from people who haven’t been verified.

Feedback - the user feedback tool was abused before, so it's limited to those who have verified their profiles now, so if people abuse it and end up getting banned, then they wont be able to return.

The website does use AI operationally, but only for reviewing reported messages/ listings to ensure they're acted on promptly with me ( + others) reviewing it after.

Essentially, the site works in the same way as before (but better - notifications of messages actually work properly, support for videos blah blah), just with a lot more education and warnings to help users make smart choices.

The website may be a flop this time around and that’s fine with me - I ran the previous version for free, for 8 years at a loss, so i'm not here trying to make millions from the site, just cover my expenses of the ID checks. The main reason I gave it another go as on Facebook i'm still regularly seeing people moaning about being scammed on the other sites so clearly the problem is still out there.

To be fair you have already done more than Used Airsofts owner lol thats the biggest scammer playground going at the moment. I even volunteered to moderate for them for free and also help secure thier site DNS to prevent spoofing/scams that impersonate thier main domain and they ignored me 😄 🤣 also the messaging on the UA has been broken for like 3 years lol

Couldn’t get on, as I was on the old forum it said my email was already on the system and updating my password wasn’t excepted. Personally not happy to give out personal details to be on either.

@ItsDave

Your transparency is appreciated and I have to say you're quite selfless in restoring an alternative.

I have some reservations about AI generally and the generic look of it but at the same time, as long as it is usable, form should follow function every time so I personally think you've made the right approach. A site that is functional and has a focus on security "but" looks like your classic AI generative CMS is infinitely preferable to an ageing, unmoderated site with no action by its webmaster to combat scamming.

I don't wish ill on the webmaster of Used Airsoft but he needs a solid kick up the backside. I wonder what liability he faces for not taking action to protect its users from scams.

I don't get why people are so paranoid about uploading verification info to a certified 3rd party that is widely used by huge businesses worldwide and is safe and secure. it's not like Dave is storing all your info on his personal computer.

I took advantage of the offer of free verified seller offer because having another place to sell stuff can't hurt and the fact so much effort has been put into safety for transactions and deterring scammers is refreshing and good for second hand sales.

Granted the cost will put a lot of people off scammers will be also virtually non existent.

(Fyi no affiliation with the owner or website, just enjoying buying and selling)

They're probably the same people who were paranoid about the covid jabs while they were happily tucking into a Rustlers burger where they have no idea what parts of the cow/chicken/pig/pigeon/rat were used.
