After prep which takes forever but is so important, this has to be the next worst stage in applying camo to a rifle.

Waiting. What feels like foreeevvveerrrr......

All I can do now is wait for 2 days so the paint gasses off enough for the clearcoat, but in my head what I want to do is reassemble the thing now (which would be a big no no ).

Edit: Black, Brown, and OG Krylon along with Morrisons finest washing up liquid for the stencil for anyone curious.

Sounds like you're doing it properly.

Not really the airsoft way..

I was after something similar to the cerakote pattern on my Lantac .22lr, this turned out really well, and just in the nick of time as I ran out of paint right at the end

Can't do it, my heart says yes but my head says "don't you DARE".

Don't worry. With a bit of use it'll soon pick up a few dings and scratches.

Personally I scrimp a bit on the prep to help it get the battle worn look a bit quicker

I’m tempted to try this myself as I love painting all my RIFs am I right in thinking the washing up liquid method requires you to wash them off with a decent amount of water ?

How do you ensure after this and once dried out that rust doesn’t become a problem ?

Do you wipe down with oil after the process is completed including the clear coat ?

I know we always think that paint and clear coat weather proofs the metal but it’s never a guarantee ?

Don't mind the question at all

You do indeed need to wash the workpiece down with copious amounts of water, hosepipe is ideal if you have one.

I completely stripped the lower and upper receivers of dust covers, springs etc but the rifs I painted are Arcturus LWT's so polymer bodies. This would absolutely work on aluminium or steel bodies though and the process would be exactly the same.

However if you go about doing this, be sure to do it on a nice hot sunny day and you shouldn't run into any issues, just make sure to let the rif dry off in direct sunlight after rinsing the soap off after the final paint coat has dried. A thin film of oil won't do any harm to krylon, and likely not clearcoat either.

It looks scary, but its a very easy method. Just be sure to watch one or two vids first (YouTube dish soap camo method).

And no, you don't need quality washing up liquid, unless you REALLY like extra bubbles
