No offense, Tackle taken but I think we have a generation split here. I come from a background of make and do, in fact half the fun is in the making. I won't expect my kit (if I can get around to it) will look 'pukka' but it will suit my needs. I call what I propose a plate carrier because it will resemble one but will, in fact, just be a lightweight B-P-V style tabard with added hard plates (already made). I have a collection of bits and pieces salvaged from bags and rucksacks etc. along with webbing of all sorts so i have the materials, I just don't know if I will find the time If I am renting a rifle I won't need pouches for mags as these renters seem to be hi-cap and refilling between rounds won't take a moment. I am all for the spirit of the game but authenticity and comparing your £300-worth of kit to my £20 won't be an issue; at least at the start! ?
Mate your only 10yrs older than me, & I remember when nothing was thrown away, if it couldn't be repaired it was "repurposed" lol, plus having served in the military when much of the kit was shite (early-mid 80's), we were always modding non parade kit, or mixing with better stuff from other services/nations, which makes me appreciate the exceptional quality load carrying kit that can be had so cheaply.
I get if you want to have a tinker to see what's achievable, fill yer boots, but if enjoying your first few skirmishes is a plan, then going with the super lightweight option I recommended first, little man bag etc, will pay you dividends, especially with knackered knees etc.
Mine are fooked & awaiting surgery, which won't happen anytime soon, & even when we hopefully return to some semblance of normality I should imagine orthopaedic ops are gonna be bottom of a very long list, even my radiotherapy's been cut short by two weeks......BUT when we get the ok to start playing again, I'll be out there "running" (aka hobbling) the the manbag & slung rifle, no struggling for me.
Sorry if I've kept on & laboured the point, but other players will back me up on this, that we've all seen players who are not at their peak, for any number of reasons, & who are struggling in inappropriate sweat inducing kit, often before they've even left the safezone at the start of the day.
Whatever happens, make sure you post up pics of what you knock up, I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice & a smidge of constructive criticism.
Good luck
Mark
