Well, a "Cosplayer" on their way to an event has realy stirred things up...

Fucking IDIOT.
Perhaps he took JustCos on their word:

covering CosPlayers with Public Liability insurance in their right as a re-enactor to wear and carry costume articles that may prove alarming or ‘scary’ to third parties who may not understand ourpurpose. This policy particularly covers the right to carry imitation weaponry that could otherwise be mistaken asreal or mistakenly reported as an offensive weapon.

He’s certainly proved to be alarming and scary to third parties who did not understand the purpose.

The force arrested the man at his home

Quite astonishing that he pulled that stunt and then walked away, in London at that.  I expect - I hope - some questions are being asked about that.

on suspicion of one count of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence

Excellent, and the right charge. It's about time costards got prosecuted for these shenanigans. Pointing it at people crossed the line into criminality.

and one count of possession of an offensive weapon.

Hmm. I wonder what that was. Hopefully not the RIF. They'll have turned his house upside down, and I expect found plenty of other spicy stuff, some of which may be on the specifically prohibited weapons list.

That's a Darwin Award kind of stupid. I was annoyed enough seeing one bloke at ComicCon in the lobby of the NEC open carrying an MP7 where the police could easily have seen and given him a really bad day.

Unfortunately, it will be actual airsofters with common sense being tarred with the stupid brush, not cosplayers with more teeth than brain cells who exploit that "insurance".

I hope more airsoft retailers are more wary about defences.

Yeah it's concerning that they apparently arrested him at his home, & weren't quick enough in their response to catch him en-route.
I was in London that day and actually at the Excel center but not for the Megacon but for the F1 experience

The place was filled with people dressed up, even saw more tactical dickeheads with ghost masks

My buddy and I have a code word for all the tactical dickheads.  We just say Cat Shit One - based on this stupid but funny video

For many retailers who are honouring "insured activities" like this are probably doing it solely to get more RIFs shipped out of their warehouses, Bending the definition of what constitutes as a valid defense is their way forward and this is a convenient outlet to permit this so. If anyones considering using systems like this to bypass the whole UKARA song and dance, Don't. If you genuinely care about the sport and want to play it, What is stopping you from simply playing the game to qualify for a RIF?

Ahoy and welcome.

Sure, and I really with they wouldn't, but it's entirely on them. It's never been an offence to obtain or attempt to obtain a RIF.

It's a fascinating ontological question: is the person that you might be in 8 weeks and 3 games more trustworthy to you than the person you are today? ?

Call me a cynic but I don't think trustworthiness is the issue. If you spend 8 weeks and 3 games to get a UKARA defence and be a dick in public with a RIF, you've given the police and CPS plenty of evidence of aforethought to the crime.

I’m aware that it’s not the buyer who is an offender upon buying a RIF, contrary to what the silly thousands of “bbguns4dirtcheap2armyoueinfantson” websites might say in their legal disclaimers about getting your “UKARA License”. If need be, the best way of getting a RIF is to buy one on site at an airsoft game, either from the venue itself or a player there as they have solid grounds always to sell you one, as you’re proving legitimate interest for valid use simply by being there.

Of course not! By playing 3 airsoft games, You’ve already broken the safety disclaimer that comes tucked in the box of every gun saying “Don’t shoot at human or animal”, potentially risking “causing injury or death”!

A 2 month long premeditated possession of an imitation firearm with intent on causing fear would be sure to impress the jury with that level of dedication, enough to slap you with a good portion of your young adult life in jail at least ;)

I'm assuming, That what they are doing is a repeat of the old 'Battle Orders' defence..

Essentially Just-Cos is acting as a 'cosplay group' and providing PLI to its members. The Home Office set the guidance for the 'reenactment' groups defence for RIF possession incredibly broadly and it requires PLI and group membership.

The government doesn't want to get into refereeing what is reenactment and what isn't and groups like the 501st have been held up as examples of that defence being needed given how broad the VCRA wording is pretty much every scifi shows guns/blasters/gaus/whatever count as an RIF.

The fact there isn't a Code of Conduct and they don't provide the full policy... Is going to bite them in the arse if anyone ever has to rely on that defence OR actually has to use the Insurance as that's generally required to be provided.

I get a copy every year with my Military Vehicle Trust  membership along with the limitations of what it actually covers for example and the LARP insurer I use when I run events has me provide those details to the players. I suspect if someone gets hurt it's going to be BAD on the day in court.

As for the London idiot... I'm genuinely shocked he wasn't slotted given the amount of armed plod out there and man in tax gear with rifle seems to be something a truly urgent call should have gone out.

Ahoy and welcome.  I think you'll fit in well here.

groups like the 501st

Sounds like some weird nerd stuff.

Maaaaaaybe.  The definition of a RIF is that it has an appearance that is so realistic as to make it indistinguishable, for all practical purposes, from:

(a) a firearm of an actual make or model of modern firearm (whether existing or discontinued); or

(b) something falling within a description which could be used for identifying, by reference to their appearance, the firearms falling within a category of actual modern firearms which, even though they include firearms of different makes or models (whether existing or discontinued) or both, all have the same or a similar appearance.

What makes and models of actual ray guns currently exist, or are discontinued? ?
