The Whisk(e)y thread

Sorry - do you mean Old No.7? The only No2 they do is from the Master Distiller series.
I believe you may be right , it was a minitature bottle and I could have sworn it said no.2 but in my mind describing it as cheap I assumed it was no.7.

The finest drop i've tasted is the Talisker, but i'm done these days: my liver is f*cked so i can't have even a teaspoon full.

The Talisker has a really deep and multi-layered flavour, but I'm not into putting water in it - just sip it in tiny amounts at first, so it just absorbs into your tongue and then inhale through your nose with your mouth open. But once you get going, lash it down. Your whole upper body seems to become infused with flavours of it and the buzz off it is nice too - a silly drunk, not maudlin or aggressive. How to actually describe the flavours though? Words like "peaty" don't have much meaning to me - I wouldn't know peat from compost, but there are tones of earthiness to it and wet trees in rain near the coast, like storm rain, ozone maybe, and complex sweetnesses, sort of like how black bread tastes sweet after chewing a mouthful of dark green salad.

Gordon Bennet I wish I could have a drop of it again  I'll have to get some for when I know i'm going to die.
Bought a bottle of Talisker (aged 10 years - think they all are on the shelf but just in case it makes a difference) yesterday and tried it with a little ice.

Initial reaction "WTF is this, eurgh it's like mold dissolved in paint thinner!" , tried another sip, realized 6 am is too early to be drinking such a drink on an empty stomach, poured it down the sink. I have been up all night wanting to try it though, was too lazy to go and get it from the kitchen.

Though sitting here, reading reviews to check whether I got a dud bottle or this was general consensus, I noticed a few reviews describing the taste; as I thought about it and got remnants of taste from my tongue, the little boxes in my head ticked off one by one to confirm what they were describing and it was a bit more palatable then. I think it'll be best after a meal, Mackerel or Steak spring to mind. It's not like anything I've tasted before and definitely has a lot of levels to it.

Personally, I don't see it being my go to drink, but I'm hoping it'll grow on me.

Try without ice. Ice will reduce the flavour so all you would get is the taste of the alcahol. At room temperature you will get more of those flavours you had afterwards.

Cheers for the tip Russel, will give it a go tonight. I normally skip the ice unless I'm having a mixer - frankly no idea what made me have it on ice lol.

Oh yeah, i forgot to mention it's also on the strong and unsubtle side  I think it goes well with cheese and oatmeal crackers, or 70-80% cocoa chocolate.

Lmao, that's no understatement Ian! I'd expected something luxurious, somewhat sweet maybe. Total shock to the system

My go to is Jura 10. Started on it years ago when it was around £25 a bottle bug now it has leapt right up to around £35 in my local co op. Luckily they run it on special a lot.

My wife is pretty good for looking out for interesting stuff. Big fan of the Japanese whisky. They do a cracking drop, the ground makes it ideal though the price has gone up since the earthquake.

Also tried a very nice Dutch and swedish whisky plus I also had the white and mckay Shackleton expedition recreation. Again very nice.

Know I have something lined up for Xmas so we shall see.

As for the water issue, the purists recommend just a drop of water as apparently it just takes some of the edge off but opens up the flavours. I prefer it neat!

Currently chillaxing with a neat Jim Beam Maple Bourbon, lovely warm syruppy flavours, perfect for Christmas! :)

Bought the exact same thing for the exact same reason ! Haven't tasted mine yet however. Looking forward to it! I've read it's amazing with Dr pepper?

Slight change but for me this time of year, it has to be a smooth glass of brandy and an even smoother bottle of port :)

God, Port, lethal stuff, far too moreish lol! Lost several hours of my life one evening drinking a bottle with a mate lol! :(

Dr Pepper? Away you heathen!
I said I'd read it was good with Dr pepper not that I drink it with it. Even so I'm going to try it now, in my book it doesn't qualify as heracy because Jim beam Maple is actually a liqueur and not a Whiskey ;)

I think its only classed as a liqueur as its infused with maple flavour as opposed to the flavour coming from the cask, so technically it can't be classed as a bourbon, but effectively thats what it is. Jim Beam also do cherry and an apricot flavoured liqueur versions too. Bloody nice stuff though! :)

It's because its below the proof required to be classed as a bourbon (40%). Also, the lack of colour supposedly suggests a lack of whiskey, or a young whiskey. I think it's more of a young whiskey rather than a lack of it, but I reckon it tastes nice whatever it is! BTW, with Dr pepper it is lovely. You'd struggle to tell there was any alcohol in it at all mate

Any of you Gent's tried Tullamore dew? It's taken my eye, wondering if its any good. Noticed I have similar taste to most of you so this should be a good place to ask!
