Anyway, what sites have you been looking at? You never know, they may have not stocked something that would have suited you. Have a little look through these links, I use some of these retailers quite regularly:

If all else fails, pick up an old set of PLCE webbing at an army surplus store.They're extremely reliable and the pouches are modular as well as being cheaper than MOLLE.

I've seen some but they come with pouches that I don't want and won't use, do you know if they can be removed? And is it possible to buy a plain vest and add your own pouches? I'm clueless when it comes to this and there's nothing on the internet that seems to help

Well, if you want to tailor your vest/rig for ammo only, have a look at MOLLE only systems: http://www.tactical-kit.co.uk/511-vtac-lbe-vest-58631-1319-p.asp
Basically with this system you buy the pouches seperately, so if you only need pouches to carry magazines then you only need to buy mag pouches that fit your weapons magazines and kinda match the colour/pattern of the vest.
The even cheaper option is to buy one of Begadi's or ACM's ammo only chest rigs: http://www.actionhobbies.co.uk/Chest-Rigs_B24A3X.aspx

The thing to grasp is that right now you don't know much, so whatever decisions you make are based mainly on guesswork. Have a look on fleabay for something cheap that will do the trick for now and, when you do know more, like what kind of role you find most enjoyable, you'll be able to choose something with exactly what you need.
You can get surplus army gear for £20 or less delivered if you're a little patient: PLCE, Web-tex vests, Northern Ireland crossed strap chest rigs... or there's always the good old South African style vest which come in every shade of camo imaginable, but are somewhat more limited than some in what type of mags will fit in the ammo pouches.
If you think that lightweight and ammo only will do you, you might want to consider US Army Enhanced Load Bearing Vest (LBV) - they come in US Woodland, Tri-Color Desert, Olive Drab & Black, that I've seen, maybe more colours, and hold 6 NATO mags and 2 grenades (or put whatever u like in the 2 small pouches).
What's your AEG?
