SR25. Which brand?

I'm considering selling my L96 to get myself an SR25 and upgrade to roughly 400-425 FPS, maybe 500 if possible.

One problem is, what brand to get?

The G&P at £585 is pretty much out of the question. Unless it's really worth the extra. Love the G&P trademarks on my M16, so this should be the same?

I'm not fond of G&G or CA's trademarks, although they're the cheapest I've found at around £330 each.

Then the ARES, which no-one here seems to like (especially Marksman), but I've read elsewhere that they're very good. This is the most appealing to me. Being an XM110 rather than the SR25, which I prefer. It has nice externals and trademarks, and is ambidextrous. Also, I prefer the tan colour. Costs £420.

Which of these will withstand an upgrade to 400+ FPS?

Which (if any) of these will withstand 500 FPS?

Which is the best deal to buy, is ARES really that bad?

I'd personally go with the G&G, there are a few reasons for this, firstly it looks awesome and it has a full travel bolt and everything which is just extra, added awesome. Secondly, I have two G&G rifles and they've BOTH been flawless out of the box, I've not even done anything to either of them and people fear them. Especially my M14. Thirdly, all the other manufacturers you've mentioned have mixed reviews, whereas everything I've heard about the G&G is good.

There's also the price, which is pretty amazing considering how awesome the gun is.

You can probably buy an aftermarket body kit at some point down the line to alter the externals if the trademarks really put you off, I'm in the same boat, anything but real trades and it makes me second guess my choice. I'd rather have no trades at all than fake ones. But even after a receiver swap it'll probably still come to less than the G&P.

Ares are probably the crappest company I've ever owned a gun by, apart from G&P so I wouldn't get that one either... The fact that it's actually an M110 turns it in my favour as well though, but to be completely honest, I don't know what the visible differences are anyway, do you? So I'd personally try and put that point to one side.

CA get a lot of mixed reviews, not really sure what to make of them, I have no personal experience with CA guns so I can't really pass judgement on it.

I'm more or less certain all of them will easily withstand an upgrade to 450ish fps, so long as you properly maintain the gearbox. Maybe change the piston, piston head, shim the gears etc etc, other people will know leagues more about this stuff than me, they're just general assumptions/suggestions.

500 though? Not sure about that, I can't think of a single site that would allow it on a semi-auto.

 
It's not just the trades on G&G that put me off. The quality and material's different to what G&P is, I really hate it to be honest. Also, I've not seen any SR25 receivers for sale anywhere. Even though it is cheapest, I'm one for tending to spend more money for small differences.

What was the problem with the ARES you got? And what gun was it?

I've looked at quite a few "what SR25?" threads on various forums, and most people say ARES offer the best SR25, and no-one's had any problems with them.

I think I've ruled out CA anyway, it's just not quite right. With the front sight attached to the rail, rather than integrated, and the gas block being weird and not proper.

That sounds alright then.

Both of my local woodland sites allow 500 FPS on semi-locked and single-shot rifles. And my local urban site allows 400 FPS on semi-locked and single-shot rifles.

Which is one reason I want a DMR rather than a bolt-action sniper now, last time I went, I was constantly hit by a guy with a 500 FPS M14. Not a fan of those, and want something to match my M16 really.

 
The Ares I had was the L85A2 and it was bad because it came shooting hot, which I know won't be an issue for you. It also had the most terrible hop ever, it used to alter itself the more you fired it, like the shots just moved the hop out of the way. The accuracy was terrible. The range was getting close to the the worst I've ever seen, which is saying a lot since it was shooting at 380fps, I'd have thought that the range without hop ought to have been pretty good shooting at that rate... But yeah, it just really tainted my opinion. It damn nearly put me off buying another L85, but I'm glad I got the ICS.

Do ICS make an SR25? Lol.

I'll admit the externals were nice and the quality of the whole thing was good, Ares are also very good at making astonishingly accurate replicas. I've always labelled them as the company that make the most accurate looking guns, but the performance on the L85 I had cancelled the positives of the aesthetics out because it was just so terrible.

Just my two pence.

If the evidence you've found weighs towards the Ares and you don't like the G&G then it seems like you've already made up your mind. Which ever you do go for in the end, good luck with it. I've always wanted an SR25 DMR, but since I ended up with an M14 from a swap deal, it seems stupid to not just turn that into my DMR.

Okay, the barrel and hop, I'll probably replace the hop and definitely the barrel. Also, maybe you just got a lemon?

Never used ICS, what are they like?

It kinda does, just wanted to what people on here think before I go and buy something over £400.

 
Out of the lot id go g&g. Im still not a huge fan of them but right now their guns are some of, if not the best guns around. Their sr25 shoots quite well out of the box too. It felt a little too light to be but that could be a pro to others. Other than that, my only dislike with it are the short mags which i don't like the look of but that's no deal breaker.

The Ares look great on the outside which is usually done to a great standard.- id love one to display just because it looks so good. However being ares, the internals probably aren't up to much. (judging by their other guns, i don't think I've seen their m110 before) if you have the money, id do one of these up- might not take standard internals though.

Now, g&p. I used to love g&p but recently they've gone downhill. Last skirmish one of my mates and someone else's relatively newish ones died. Still have lovely externals but im starting to doubt their qc and id go for the g&g because of this.

The ARES takes a standard V2 gearbox, with slight differences on one side due to the ambidextrous fire selector, but a standard one will still fit apparently.

I've recently started liking G&P again. I wasn't too impressed with my M16 at first, but now that I've put the stock hop rubber and nub in it, it shoots consistently with really good accuracy and range. Last time I played, I got moaned at by people thinking I was shooting 400 FPS on full auto.

What parts would need changing if I were to get an ARES and do it up? I know I'd change some parts in any of the guns, as I want higher FPS, so if it's just a few more, or the same parts, then I'll get the ARES.

Anyway, is there a GBB SR25? I've seen a video of one, but didn't say the brand or anything. And I think it was MadBull who posted pictures of what seemed like the receiver of one on Facebook a while ago.

g&g are very good externally and internally,i would pick it over ares because they are very hit n miss.only problem is that g&g only take their own mags.as for 500 fps on a site you could get a 4 second mosfet which represents the cycling of a bolt action,but you would need a new motor and run it on 7.4 lipo to get a crisp trigger

 
Problem with the G&P is that it's £585, and out of stock everywhere. I think it's discontinued as it's not even on their website any more.

Local sites don't mention that, they just tell you not to spam the trigger too much.

I'd get a new motor anyway, the G&P comes with an M120 high speed, which wouldn't be too good at high FPS set ups.

If you see a G&P SR25 in stock, in the UK, let me know please :) .

Saying that, the ARES is out of stock everywhere too..

 
ive found a g&g one but not g&p.you will have to lock the g&p to semi though

Yeah I've found G&G about quite a bit. The G&P can go full auto, but you have to overcome the blocker on the selector switch, so it's not obvious it can go full auto, so should be alright. It's not like I'd cheat anyway, could hurt someone full auto 500 FPS..

 
which sr-25 where you going to get the spr or the sniper which is the one with the slide over silencer

 
Sniper, the SPR has an ugly barrel. I'm not getting G&G though, hate the crappy trademarks on them, and my friend's and step-dad's feel weird to use.

So it's G&P or ARES. If I find a G&P in stock, I may have to stretch and pay a bit more to get it, otherwise it's sell the L96 and get the ARES. Then replace/upgrade as parts break and fall off, if they do.

 
Doesn't seem to be anywhere either, just parts for it and the rail set..

 
The copy of AI I got from the arms fair had an article in the front of it from the editor and he was saying he had a G&P SR25 that he just couldn't get to work right.

There were no other details on it, just thought I'd throw it in.
