Setting motor height

I've been fiddling with the motor height of my JG Sig 552 and my Double Eagle M906C.  I'm quite happy with the Sig, it's sounding better than before and has a reasonable rate of fire considering the dinky 7.4v I'm running out on.

The DE is harder to make happy, I've tried two different motors and they both run very hot, thanks to the active braking.. the 11.1v battery perhaps shoving to much current in, and perhaps me not setting it correctly...

So... Apart from "does it sound ok", are there any good hints and tips for getting it right? 

Presumably it's better to set it too low than too high.

But it's there anything more scientific than those two things?

Yeah, active breaking is very hard on motors.

Luckily there is a lot of leeway for adjusting the motor height and it only causes a problem at the extremes.

In some gearboxes there's a window to see the Pinion and Bevel gears mesh together.  This way you can remove the grips so you can see the engagement and mark the adjuster screw where it should be.

If there isn't a window in the gearbox its possible to drill a small observation hole but obviously at a risk.

Another effecive but long way is to open the gearbox and attach the motor to the half shell so you can see the gears mesh clearly.  Mark the adjustment and its perfect.

Most people will just screw it all the way in and then undo one or two turns. (Listen to it as you undo half a turn at a time)

With my DE M908A it was VERY unhappy with any pinion gear other than that which was on the stock motor, only the stock pinion gear would mesh well with the bevel gear.

Well that's a bit concerning, I don't have the pinion puller (they cost money I don't want to spend), and really didn't want to get involved with anything more technical than swapping bits in and out. 

The classic army motor sounds absolutely fine as it is right now though.
