National Service

I wonder if there will be an option for 18yr olds to join the reserve forces & do their service part time & get paid?

The thing is that anyone who would be interested in this kind of thing can already can do it and get paid for it. You can join the military at 16 and blue light services at 18

Yeah, but they're not interested, as the recruiting numbers show (and various retention numbers reinforce).  Understandably so in a lot of respects I'm sure.  Which I'd guess is at least partly why they're considering just forcing people; election theatrics aside.  I don't know what the minimum service time is for most jobs outside my own, but it's probably not much longer than the national service idea except with better pay and prospects, so yeah maybe the plan is make the NS look less appealing and just corral recruits that way lol.

That's my point, those who are interested have those opportunities and those who aren't will do anything they can to get out of it.

Also please tell me I'm not the only one getting Starship Troopers vibes from this

The government could also try retaining all the people they have trained over the past few years rather. With underfunding and a lack of equipment those trained professionals who did volunteer can’t be arsed to be frank.

I think public engagement with the forces is important as well, service people I think have always felt under appreciated by the public apart from the occasional headline.

What I think is that volunteering has merits and should be encouraged.  However, what I know is that Uniparty Blue has cut funding for the National Citizen Service by 2/3rds since 2019, and reportedly Sanook personally tried to scrap it entirely as chancellor.

So what I conclude is that this is an unfunded, unplanned, entirely fantastical Hail Mary announcement by a man who doesn't mean a word of it, and whose wife is already picking out the curtains for their Malibu mansion.

When James Dimly was rolled out to explain that this definitely compulsory probably unpaid indentured servitude would likely not have an element of compulsion, maybe, it became pure farce.
