I have the 556 and I think one of the main differences with the different replica units are which battery they use.

I have a few devices using CR123 Lithium so standardised as it makes carrying spares in the field easier.

After I bought one, I found that the replicas aren't truly holographic, which the real ones are and which is their real benefit.

I also bought the plastic insert to protect the lens and found this didn't fit properly.

So, I ended up with a magnifier and flip up lens protector on my rail as well.

There are a few US military documents floating around the net covering infantry tactics and a few cheapish books on Kindle.

Do what i did when i began the sport, buy a standard ACM (all china made) Eotech Replica. I'd recomend the 552, used by many military forces and looks great on most guns so you have the realism, and they're usually £25 -£35 on forums/ebay/airsoft shops. It also runs on AA batteries and lasts for months on a single charge!

Basically go with what you think looks good on your gun, they all do pretty much the same. Batteries will last ages anyway so thats not a major factor. I use an Acog replica red dot on my MP5, it looks cool and uses small button cells. I have used it about once a week for 2-3 months and am still on the batteries it came with. I usually forget to turn it off and only realise when I check a few hours after I get home

Have a look at this for cheap - 40mm diameter too, so easier to use with both eyes open than the standard 30-2mm or the 20mm that needs to be up close to your eye. Probably needs a lens protector - a circle cut from a pair of safety goggles will do the trick better than those rail mount window thingies, as they can't get knocked off.

I tried one of those clear covers for Eotechs - it did just fit but squashing it in damaged the optical qualities, which weren't good to begin with, so I'm going with making my own out of 3M goggles. As far as Eotechs go, the 552 needs a lot more rail space than the 551 or 556, for eg, and the size and shape of the lens means that they can't be set too far down the gun without compromising your view of targets more than necessary for a dot sight.

I got a 551 for my G&G TR15 Raider L and it looks pretty good. I also have a 3 x Magnifier that can sit right behind it and still have plenty of space.
