Unit price on one of those must be a lot. Nice to know we're getting some better equipment like these and the EMAGs, even with the cuts and everything.
IIRC the DR is a 1-4x magnification. LDS could be the version with the Docter? IDK, I've never heard of it.
Cuts wise, from my understanding the military are obviously saying we need the Glocks and new stuff to remain effective and modern. The police are saying they want more weapons chambered in higher calibres etc. So I'm guessing the government says okay so some of this stuff but has to cut in other areas (manpower, tank corp etc)
yeah but its a bit pathetic that we are apparently such a modern power but we cant just buy the glocks and stuff without taking away from other regiments or decreasing the numbers
Just read up a bit on the LDS. Lightweight Day Sight. It does come with the Docter. I say that but it's the Shield (same thing really) We didn't go for the DR because it's 50% more expensive, heavier and more complex.
I don't know if it's true now because it might have been in 2011 but we were the world's 6th richest nation IIRC. We also had the (fourth?) biggest defence budget in Europe.
92,000 or so men is not enough. How many of them are actual troops I wonder.
yeah well mr B we do have a big-ish budget compared to the rest of Europe but that's because they don't have as much money as us but the money we do have goes on benefits and stuff not schools,NHS or defense they seem to think that people on benefits who cant be bothered to work are more important than our safety.. because that makes sense!
the second one said nothing about defense? a bit on crime but i am talking about the military more than police force and the first link is saying exactly what i was? how we are spending 17% on welfare but only 7% on defense? so i dont get what you where trying to prove by posting those links?
Thanks for the links, they are an interesting read. I did know that there are less immigrants than we think there are, but it was surprising to see some of those statistics. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of benefit cheats and so on but a lot of people seem to think we're the only country in the world with problems.
It's pretty simple really - as a nation we don't need a large standing army, we do however have a large and ageing population that require health care, pensions and benefits. The second link was to illustrate the misconception by the vast majority of the British public that there are far more benefit cheats than there actually are.
If we start spending more on defence than we do on welfare we'll pretty quickly end up in the same situation as the USSR did. You can easily see t...
You can see where the money has been spent in defence if you look beyond boots and Glocks. The procurement program for new vehicles in Afghanistan for example.
I'd say there are more honest workers than we think there are and most people on welfare do legitimately deserve it. I know I agreed with Charlie earlier so I don't want to sound like a hypocrite but the government does have other responsibilities. It puts spending into perspective when you actually see the figures. As Lozart said a lot of people 'have the proportions...out of whack' and the article disproving common misconceptions associated with similar social issues Charli...
