But is it a tricked out civvie one or a beaten up surplus defender?

Either way... feed your adiction.

I wish it was a Defender, they're silly expensive right now.

I'm looking at Disco IIs, found a tricked out one for €13k and another, more run of the mill for 4.5k and probably in the need for TLC..

Hey, 90% of Land Rovers ever made are still on the road!

But the other 10% made it back home.

Fwiw, my parent's had a late Series 1 Disco from new and my Dad says it was one of the worst financial decisions he's made.  It constantly had issues and back at LR.  Not just engine, electrical, typical LR stuff but dodgy seals, leaks etc. It put me right off them.

Can't quite get my head around seeing Land Rovers in Italy for some reason

There are quite a few in my town, most of them are RRS, evoques, disco 5s, one new defender, one Velar and a few old Defs and disco IIs..

They're seen more as a status indicator more than offroaders, but yeah we do have them :P

I do know about the issues and I also know that most of them are easy fixes that one can do in his garage without special equipment, that's why I want one.

I think it is quite funny that British Chelsea tractors are seen as status symbols in Italy, of all places... ?

You've got another vehicle to use while it's broken right?

They're a status symbol because you've got to have shed loads of cash to keep the thing going ?

I've got a 2004 V8 disco 2 - super practical. Huge space in the back, superbly comfortable to drive, excellent visibility. Also immense off road. Mine is lifted, bigger tyres, longer shocks etc, and a bit of underbody protection.

But - i had to put a new engine into it within a month of buying it (bought at 55k miles), constant electrical gremlins, leaking sunroofs and almost everything else, sagging headlining, issues with the anti roll system, problems with the xyz gear selector. The rotting rear chassis is probably the element that will finally kill it over the next year (at 75k miles). I've managed most fixes myself - there are amazing internet resources and forums, and parts are generally plentiful/not crazy expensive in the most part (apart from the new engine)!

Go for the purchase, they are great fun - but go in with your eyes open. Buying a proper land rover diagnostic tool is not an option, its critical. I'd recommend a nanocom, its saved me so many times.
