The 'How Did Your Airsoft Day Go? Thread

Today, I took a rare trip down to deepest Kent for a FilmSim at Gunman's Battle Lakes, a site that I once played at regularly and where I also marshalled for a couple of years with the best marshalling team ever.

Checking in was quick and efficient and it was great to have a chat with Tony/Val, the site manager, who I had not seen for ages.

Chronoing was equally efficient and, after the usual entertaining safety brief and game brief, which was based on the film The Rock, which I have never seen, we set off for the morning's half of the game. This required us to gather items needed to produce VX missiles, transport them to our base and defend them from the other team, who wanted to prevent us doing so. The VX was represented by a number of water bombs, which had to be collected and stored together in a number of long tubular containers for transport. If one of the water bombs burst, everyone within a 5m radius was dead. There were a lot of other nuances, but that was the core of the game.

If you were hit, you could be regened by a colleague, who could also drag you out of the line of fire; you could also try to crawl away. However, doing either of these made you a viable target again. Once you had been hit, the next hit sent you back to your regen, of which there were two, a fixed one and a portable mobile one.

With around 40 or so players on a very large and very wooded site, this was always going to be a game with lots of encounters, firefights, surprises and changes of fortune and so it proved. As the first Duke of Wellington noted, "The history of a battle, is not unlike the history of a ball. Some individuals may recollect all the little events of which the greatest result is the battle won or lost, but no individual can recollect the order in which, or the exact moment at which, they occurred, which makes all the difference to their value or importance."

My memories of the morning are of multiple memorable firefights won and lost, being surprised by the enemy, surprising the enemy, encountering Gary with blood streaming down his face, trying to work out if "those guys over there" were friendly or not, and of the heat; did I mention that it was really, really hot?

Unfortunately, a great morning of airsoft had to come to an end and we all adjourned to the safe zone for luncheon. At Battle Lakes, lunch can be ordered from the nearby cafe in the morning and is then delivered to the site; I took pizza.

The afternoon's game was based on us having secured enough VX for three missiles, which were located around the site. The enemy had to neutralise them; if they did so, we could reactivate them if someone with the appropriate card could get to one. At the start, the other team were all in the kill house with one life; after they were killed there, they left the structure and reverted to the normal regen rules. I did ask if this meant that we could just ignore them and spend the afternoon quietly guarding our missiles, but we had to fight them there. Some of our team went straight for the kill house while the rest of us went to defend the missiles; I headed for the fuel dump because I like it there, and dug into a favourite position under a stunted tree/large bush. After a while of not a lot happening, the enemy began to attack us; we repulsed three attacks but, after the third one, I was the only defender left. Another attack came in, during which I hit three of them, but one of the remaining two took me out with a grenade.

At our regen, I met up with a team mate and we set off to see how much chaos we could create; the answer was quite a lot! We spent the rest of the afternoon ambushing groups of the enemy, getting into great firefights, walking to and from regen and generally enjoying ourselves until the game ended.

I have no idea who won and don't really care.

It was an excellent and fun day of airsoft. With low numbers on a large site, it was very different from the average skirmish day and made a nice change. I think both Gary and Sam would happily go back, even though it is a long journey for them, so I am sure we will return. The day was very well organised, well structured and was played in a very good spirit. Many thanks to Tony/Val for putting it together and for still providing the best briefings in airsoft.

I took a trip to Worthing Airsoft this weekend for a... fairly quiet one. Clearly everyone was up late watching the sportsball last night or something, I don't really know. Anyway, today was a low numbers day, which usually makes the airsoft better and today was no exception. It was a very warm one, with temperatures going up to about 29C, however it was also rather windy which kept the temperatures pretty bearable; some people were even complaining they felt a bit chilly in the safety brief! However, that wind made it incredibly difficult to snipe, and with me still using my Tanaka bolt actions that made life rather difficult as they're my most gas efficient and the best guns to burn through my 144a with. However, I'm not one to back away from a challenge! My setup was super lightweight today with only a lightweight belt kit and a repro D3CRM micro rig with no ghillie and only a short sleeved t-shirt. This was because I was running what I plan on using at the Defiant battlesim next weekend at Longmoor, which is urban so my kit choice wasn't the best for camo in the woods, and for guns it was the Tanaka m24 + TM p226 combo.

First two games were a king of the hill style game on the tower base at the top of the site. We've been playing the bottom of the site for the past few game days, but today was kept at the top (mostly) because of the low numbers and high temperatures. First game I simply went to a spot that I liked and held a path, racking up quite a few kills despite Mother Nature doing everything in her power to push my shots way off to the left. Then for the second game we swapped sides and two things happened. Firstly, I found a far less exposed position to thread shots through a spot. It was so good that even me in my black t-shirt had a ghillie walk right past me and only shot me because I thought he was a friendly and took a shot at someone else. Secondly, I found that my weight loss and general fitness came in incredibly useful, as after three of us got taken out by this ghillie who spent the whole game flanking all the way around, me and one of the others sprinted back to our respawn and then sprinted back to take him out. Our respawn wasn't that far away, forcing the ghillie to then have to move off quickly, getting him spotted and taken out just before we would've come up on him again; we were back in our strong positions in less than a minute from the point of getting taken out, totally nullifying the flanking action that took the most of the game to set up. I managed to get a lot of kills this game, despite the incredibly strong winds now trying to push my shots to the right now that we were facing the other way after swapping sides.

Third game took us all the way to lunch and required both teams to find a mad scientist, who was a player dressed in all white. He was let off the leash and told to be really difficult, only able to be somewhat controlled while someone had a hand on him; as soon as that hand was removed, he was carrying loads of grenades that he would just hurl about the place. One of his impact grenades is on a fishing line, so he could literally throw it and immediately run away without fear of losing it. The objective was to find him, capture him, and bring him to one of the bases at the top of the site. Our team's plan was to simply wait at the top of the site for them. I took a spot that watched entrances to two of the paths that led up from the bottom of the site, but there was surprisingly little movement there. I got a few kills on players in the middle, and I caught a ghillie trying to be sneaky (brown ghillies are actively awful camo in heavily green environments...).

I was thinking of going home at lunch. My kit clearly worked well, which is what I set out to test to make sure it was all good for next weekend, but I decided to stay on. Game after lunch was a gold rush where each team had a case that could carry a single gold bar. We had to get our case into one of the buildings, take a gold bar, take it back to respawn, and do that as many times as possible to get as many gold bars as possible. Me and my friend spent most of the game trying to confine the ghillies to a certain part of the site that they seemed fond of. I did think it was a bit strange that they put basically all the ghillies apart from my friend on one team, but I didn't mind. I like the handicap when playing counter-sniper, and frequently will find myself coming out on top due to fieldcraft and patience. Plus it's great practice for said fieldcraft, doing counter sniper gameplay without any proper camo against fully ghillied players, as you really have to be on your game to overcome the equipment gap.

Then the final game I played in was a 3 base domination where I didn't do much. Watched a flank, moved to offer fire support elsewhere, picked off a few players through the game, but nothing really that noteworthy. Then I called it after that. Last games were a timed assault on one of the bases, but for me it was time for a well-earned rest and drive home. On my drive home, there was an absolute bell-end in a VW Golf though. He was with his girlfriend/wife, with a baby in the back, and he was constantly pulling out in front of people, totally ignoring road signs, being in the wrong lane and then almost ploughing into the side of other cars when he realised. In my 6 months on the road so far, he was by far the worst driver I've seen and almost caused an accident with me (he almost drove into the side of my car at a roundabout when he was in the wrong lane), as well as other people when he was swerving between lanes and generally just ignoring all road signs and markings. As soon as I got onto the dual carriageway I absolutely shot past him because I didn't want to be anywhere near him and the inevitable accident he was going to cause with his family in the car.

All in all, good day. Despite it being 29 - 30C for most of the day, the wind made it feel significantly less than that (early to mid 20s at most), though that wind also made sniping incredibly difficult. Looking forward to the battlesim next weekend, but totally ready for it now thanks to this weekend.

Played the morning game at Apocalypse in Kent yesterday. I could only play the morning game as I had family stuff to do in the afternoon so packed light (for me), mags pre filled, when I ran out of ammo I ran out of ammo.

Site was fairly busy despite the late night/early morning for a lot watching England scrape past Norway. Had a good catch up Big John, the owner, and there is lot of new building work going on at the site which is always really good to see.

Packed the LCT AK12 as my rifle to use and freshly rebuilt LCT G3 DMR to play with on the range. AK was lovely but the G3 while significantly better still isn't quite right yet.

The morning game was cary the bomb and 'blow up' various locations around the site, I played on the 'terrorists' team moving the bomb. This is always an interesting game and is either great flowing fun or you just get bogged down and picked off, thankfully it was flowing fun. The bomb was big, heavy and a 2 man carry and needed to be moved from the bottom of the village to stockade then onto no mans and finally village with a 10 min hold in each location for the bomb to be armed and explode. We got organised at the start and had a guy with a riot shield in front of the bomb carriers providing mobile cover and a wide skirmish line to try and hold off being flanked and everyone moved with the bomb to the objectives. It was a tight game with the village being taken with only a few minutes left on the clock and the other team trying to push us out to the last second. Shout out the sniper team behind village who kept picking us off and just couldn't be found.

Now to try and finish sorting the G3, it's had some issues with very inconstant power over the last couple of games shooting 1.8J at the chrono at home but dropping to .6-.8J after 20 - 30 shots on site. I have been through and replaced every o ring along with a good clean and re grease, a fresh hop rubber, nub and a couple of washers on the front of the hop unit to push it tight against the gearbox. It now seams to hold its power which is great but it either under or over hops, consistently. I don't think the prommy purple rubber and nub are right for it so will swap to a different nub and keep trying but I think progress has been made.

Fantastic day at Gunman Camp Bravo (12/07/26)!

It's a real shame the site is closing in September, but I suppose all good things have to come to an end.
It was hot! around 31–33°C – so running my GBBR took a lot of tweaking with the NPAS. In the end I admitted defeat and switched over to my AEG for the rest of the day.

Turnout was around 15 vs 15 (roughly 30 players), probably thanks to the school holidays and the heat, but the atmosphere was brilliant. Everyone was checking people had enough water, sharing electrolytes, and generally looking out for each other. Hittaking was excellent all day, the games were fast-paced and well organised, and the marshals built hydration breaks into the schedule. Genuinely one of the best days of airsoft I've had in a long time.

The highlight was ending up in loads of little personal battles with regulars I know. Every firefight seemed to end with a "good shot!" and a fist bump back in the safe zone.

The only downside was one sniper who, despite having a clear view of both me and my mate, chose to take face shots. The marshals dealt with it immediately, had a quiet word, and there wasn't another issue for the rest of the day. Gunman always runs a tight ship,They even have a no rifle-camera policy for snipers. But considering the communities attitude to a certain sniper and face shots i do find it ironic. I Dont see an issue its why i wear full face! But the irony doesn’t escape me!

On a more tragic note... I managed to break one of my 3D-printed grenades. 😭 Time to get the printer going my next game in a few weeks!
Thanks to everyone who made it such a great day. Camp Bravo, you'll definitely be missed when September comes around.

Was a good day. Properly enjoyed it. It was my boy with the riot shield. :)
His day didnt start well as the VMP1 he has snapped the front off the hop up replacement so the suppressor just fell off. Couldn't really use it like that. And he forgot his gloves! Like i said, not a great start. :D Ended up buying him one of the nuprol mostfet M4's (he needed a new reliable pew, most of his have been hand me down type things) which i have to say is bloody impressive. 0.9J out the box and the range on it is mental!
Jon is very proud of his buildings, isnt he? :D he was showing me the shop and the new toilet blocks. So glad he's done the hill grading too, i was brave enough to take my Primadonna Alfa up the hill and still have a sump!!! :D
Really enjoyed sunday, as we usually go on a saturday but as this was the first in a while, it was awesome. Other than the DMR guy having range estimation issues it was a bloody good day. :)

Your boy played a great game, in the first push to Stockade he medic'd me twice keeping himself curled up under the riot shield, excellent play. On the push into no mans he kept the bomb carriers well covered, again superb positioning!!

I think I saw you guys at Chrono, tan VMP? having issues. Glad he got a new pew, makes game days expensive but it makes such a difference having good reliable kit.

Site is really coming along now, new shop looks immense for a site shop and the plans for the safe zone sound really good for when the weather draws in.

Have you put your names down for the Battlesim? I played the DEA vs Cartel and it was such a laugh, I played cartel, didn't pick up a gun until after lunch and fired my first shot at around 3pm. Think this one will be different being force on force but looking forward to it.

There was a guy with a bolty having similar MED issues a few weeks back, Marshalls reminded him a couple of times and then he got sent back to the safe zone.

Today was a day where anything that could go wrong did. My Vector maverick stripped the securing screw so it's now stuck on my AK side mount. One of my pp-19 mags disintegrated and the king arms val mags are still unreliable and outdated as fuck. But I still had a fantastic time at dirty dog regardless. My cardio has never been better so I was able to haul shit around the site no bother. Really pushed myself to get stuck in at the front of the action especially as a medic on the first game of the day. Hardly shot a BB off that first match but still felt useful keeping our team in the fight and encouraging a successful push that got us to the bomb.
Spent the next game on defence in the village and while we weren't the victors overall there was definitely a few personal wins going on. Used the arcturus pp-19 and it's still got amazing range and trigger response despite being stock and coming to me second hand as well used. Got dug into a shipping container early doors and managed to run through ten 90 round mags of really effective fire with some great takedowns before I ran totally dry and called myself out to go reload in the spawn. After that my luck changed and i got hit to help a lot more as the other team were playing well and absolutely relentless.
My last game of the day was unfortunately less fun. Back out on the full site and playing medic again I got a very painful reminder I had forgotten to put me gloves back on after lunch. While trying to revive a downed player I was definitely not as in cover as I though and took a burst right across the unprotected hand. Definitely the worst welts and swelling I've ever received playing Airsoft and absolutely my own fault! I managed to see out the rest of the game (including successfully encouraging two players to have a duel to decide how to call a trade hit) before calling it a day.

I haven’t seen a duel at a site for years. It sounds like a very good day, despite the issues.

My fjrst day was amazing. Got into airsoft recently and was a bit nervous, there was about 50 people their and no lie everyone was extremely welcoming and even let me try iut their guns!

Just due to that experience its made me wanna go back and start looking into getting my first rifle
Most players are friendly and more than happy to talk about their guns or let you try them; in fact, trying to stop them talking about them is usually the problem!

Where did you play?

That sounds spot on! I went to Edinburgh Battlezone and ended up playing against an actual team😅, love this community tho, everyone is extremely welcoming and wants to help

Long post time because full weekend yay

What. A. Day. Or rather, what a weekend! I spent this weekend up at Longmoor training camp for a Defiant Events battlesim, Saturday being midcaps, Sunday being realcaps. It's the first battlesim I've attended there, since I couldn't go before with no driving license, and I must say I will be signing onto every single one from here on until something changes. I haven't had a game like this weekend, especially the Sunday, in a long time.

So, Saturday. 5:30am alarm clock. Not so fun, but it was okay. Fortunately Longmoor isn't too far from me and is about 1hr 20mins (I can do it in about 1hr 10mins that early in the morning with no traffic). I arrived on site, parked up and sorted my guns. I brought two Tanakas; the m700 built to be an m40a5, and the m24 as a backup. Passed chrono, no issues there. Our respawn was by a crashed helicopter at the bottom of the site, and we got into our groups for the day. My group was a mishmash of a few smaller groups, 3 of us, plus a group of 2, then a group of... I want to say about 4 or 5, and I was the sniper for the day (I was our sections sniper for both days). Every player had a tag, and there was an objective to get as many of those tags as we could, so if you shot someone and then got to them during their 5 minute bleedout, you could grab their tag and score it back at respawn. Main objectives shifted through the day, as every hour or two they were updated, but we completed our first two hours objectives in... wait for it... 7 minutes. 7 whole minutes. We had to get these magnetic lights (bombs) to four of the buildings near the tan team spawn to "destroy" them, permanently locking them off for the rest of the event, and then we had to grab a bunch of fuel cans from one of the other houses in that row. Our team absolutely legged it as soon as the games started and we managed to get all the way up to these buildings because for some reason the tan team decided to send their forces on a flank around the train track down the side of the site. This allowed us to set up in these buildings and perform all our objectives there pretty quickly. They did get into the buildings on our side, leading to me sniping across the village to hit them, but I was eventually taken out after someone got into the building we were in, shot me through one of the crawl spaces, then the building proceeded to be "destroyed", so off I went to respawn. Spoiler alert, that is the only time I got hit and taken out in the entire weekend, because I am a squirrely sneaky sniper.

I then spent a few hours separated from my group. They were kickin' ass and takin' names elsewhere on site, but doing a lot of door kicking, so I floated around and helped other sections with their objectives, while keeping on comms with my section in case they needed eyes anywhere. I was really happy with some of the shots I was getting, especially considering there was a pretty strong wind. Eventually we grouped back up again to make a push for some far objectives, going all the way around the edge of the site to try and get to it. However we got spotted and had to fight our way through a bunch of defenders and then their reinforcements, slowing our push down and eventually picking everyone off. I was the last left standing, but using my p226 I basically opted to try escape and evasion instead of fighting. I tried to make my way alone to the objective, seeing if I could sneak it, but then I saw a large force of enemy players pushing towards it and opted to fall back instead.

Then the final hour was basically just holding as many buildings as we could. I stayed in the back line, taking pot shots across the street and down the road, but I wasn't pushing out. I was mostly giving callouts and the occasional precision kill. Scores at the end of Saturday were 127 to the tan team, 124 to us green team... except the tan team went into the marked "don't go into this building" building three times, setting off the motion sensor alarms three times and getting a -300 for this (-100 each time), so the actual scores were 124 green vs -173 tan. We were told about this building at the start of the day during the brief, and it was marked with red tape all around the building, loads of red Xs taped on all the exterior walls, so I'm amazed they went in three whole times.

Then when I got back to the safe zone I had an epiphany. A moment of clarity. Why would I sleep in a bunk on Longmoor, when I could just... drive home. Have proper food. A shower. Sleep in my own bed. So I actually headed off and drove home on Saturday, coming back on Sunday.

Sunday was the better day for sure. Everyone using realcaps made everyone a lot more careful with their shots and put everyone on a level playing field. Saturday got a bit spammy at points, where people were just constantly shooting into windows even when nobody was peeking because if you have 8 midcaps that's a lot of BBs. If you have 8 realcaps, you're running out *fast*. Another 5:30am start, another chrono, another gear up, and another brief (anyone there on Saturday could skip the 30mins safety brief, but still had to attend the game brief). We swapped ends for Sunday, so now we were at the top of the site and hilariously I barely left spawn all day but still had massive impact. At first we had to defend the same building that we stole the jerry cans from yesterday in 7 minutes and we managed to hold it for the full two hours. I spent my time watching the back, communicating to my team when the tans were trying to push in from the train tracks and occasionally taking them out from a distance. I got some cracking sniper kills here, watching the entire back street and shooting them as they took cover on the other buildings while trying to shoot at my team mates; where I was meant that they had no idea I was there and were completely open to me.

I then pushed around this barbed wire fence to where a U-shaped mound was, hiding behind it and still taking shots from a similar angle. On Sunday I decided to bring my mk23 instead of my p226 as my sidearm, and this was... a really good decision. I found more times where the silence would've been more helpful on the Saturday, so when I went home that night I swapped out my pistols and it worked so well. The tan team all pushed to this mound, but had no idea I was on the outskirts of it. My team comm'd to me that someone was literally 6m in front of me on the other side of the mound, so I popped up and quickly took him out with the mk23, then slowly pushed around the outside and took out another guy. With how quiet the mk23 was, they had no idea where I was and it worked so well

However, in the morning shenanigans, I found that the Tanaka m700s took a leaf out of Anakin Skywalker's book. They don't like sand (it's rough, coarse, and irritating. And it gets everywhere!), and my m40a5 got really gunked up with sand to the point it was jamming and the bolt wasn't engaging properly, so I went back and set up the m24 instead. I did some basic troubleshooting and worked out it's the bolt itself, so I'm not looking forward to the deep clean that's going to need, but that's tomorrow's problem. All my mags will need cleaning too as sand got in there as well and caused some of them to jam.

So I missed a few hours while I sorted guns, did some troubleshooting, had some food and water. I finally went out after we had achieved all our objectives (again) and were about to go into the final hour where the objective was simply hold as many buildings as possible. Got a few nice shots with the m24, but the real glowing moment was a masterful sequence with the mk23. I saw two players push across the road in the distance and then accurately predicted where they'd pop out. I set up with my mk23 aimed at the corner, then as soon as one peeked out I squeezed off a single shot which hit him. I then repositioned to a slightly different angle, so when his friend peeked out from a slightly different spot he didn't see me and so I hit him as well. Now both of them had no medic bands and so I fell back and let my team know of their attempted sneakiness. They quickly got taken out, because while I was falling back, climbing onto a hesco barrier and deploying my rifle's bipod on the roof of a guardhouse, I started to watch loads of tan players calling it quits. I soon found out that we had pushed them all the way out of the village, capturing every building. Scores at the end of Sunday (just came in as I was typing this) and it was 103 to green team (we took a -100 from going into the alarmed building this time, so it was 203 - 100) against 45 to tan team. This definitely echoed what I could see about what happened on the Sunday, as green team felt so dominant all day.

Anyway, final thoughts of the day are that the Defiant Events battlesims are probably some of the best airsoft of the whole year. Shift Your RIFT is the best event of the year, but the Defiant Events battlesim takes the cake for the best airsoft of the year. Hands down. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire weekend, and all the guys I played alongside were fantastic. I never met most of them before today, but we worked really well as a team on both days (different people on the two days as a lot of people could only do 1 day). The one downside I had was that someone on the tan team screwed up on the Sunday and tuned into our radio frequency and kept broadcasting very crackly comms through the channel. I know the mess up was on their side, because we had no issues on the Saturday, but the Sunday we basically couldn't use comms because we were constantly getting bombarded by another unit's comms on the other side.

The next battlesim is a 24h one and I am really looking forward to that (I simply won't play at night because I am scared of the dark), but tomorrow... all the maintenance that needs doing. All the sand that needs clearing... Ugh...
