The flip side of this... Several times I have had a teammate on a barricade or something in a much better position to throw a smoke grenade than me. I have called "oi mate", clearly showed him the smoke grenade and gently thrown it underarm so they can pop the smoke. Free pyro! Great right? Smoke out and we all advance across the bridge or open area. No... They promptly run away and get shot thinking I had somehow got behind them covered them for fun and decided to taunt them with the means in which I would end them.

The word for grenade in Spanish (Granada) is the same word for pomegranate.
Some years ago, i was in a restaurant in Spain, the menu had a salad with one of the ingredients being "fragmentation hand grenade" ?

The germans in ww2 had the Eihandgranate translating as "egg hand grenade" and was more common than the steilhandgranate we all know and love.
I have it in my head that the original french term for a grenade was the same as apple, but slap a big citation needed on that.

The cheese eating surrender monkeys in WW2 had smoke grenades to cover their tactical withdrawals. La grenade fumigene can be easily confused with le fromage fume

Grenades were used in Song Dynasty China (960-1279), being known as Thunder Crash Bombs (震天雷).
