Seems more likely he's tried to remove it with a pair of pliers and torn it up.
Also I feel sorry for anyone who turns up to a game day with that sniper rifle and a bottle of 0.20g Bulldog BB's expecting to be the next "American Sniper"
Only to reach out 20M on random flight paths whilst trying to make anything out in the shadows of the scope.

The best one like that I saw was someone who was running a spring shotgun in an wide open outdoor game. He'd been moaning all day about people not calling their hits, to prove his point he let off one shot roughly in the same direct as someone in a window of a building about 70 metres away before proclaiming "see what I mean! It's out of order!"....errr, yeah mate.

indeed, it's surprising given you can actually see where bb's are going that people still fall for it.
these days even though i'm familiar enough with my hardware i have a pretty damn good idea where my shots are going even when they're going beyond the distance i can track them, i still give folk the benefit of the doubt unless i actually see the shot land.
of course this is where magnification can come into play to extend the range you can be sure you've landed a hit, but at extreme range you then open up the possibility of legitimate no-feels.
