TM HK417 or TM HK416 Delta

Chaps and ladies (see i'm being pc here),

I have the option of getting my grubby mitts on either a HK417 or a HK416 Delta and I can't decide on which one to get. Before anyone says buy both I won't coz I'd get a telling off by the missus and will then end up buying her roses and I hate friggin paying for dead flowers! 

So without further adieu what are your thoughts? 

It seems the 416 variant is popular as it's CQBR size and light to run around with. Plus it uses M4 mags so easier to get mags whether you buy them or nick your mates... Someone will always have one... The friggin Seals use the 416's, well they do in the series on Sky so that's pure porn!

The 417 on the other hand looks like  friggin beast. It weighs in at 4.5kg as standard and you can club someone if they don't take their bb hits and whistle dixie. It's got the stronger double torque motor (considered the best motor I've been told). However, the mags aren't a standard M4 size (Scar H size 7.xx) and they hold only 70 rounds so a smaller capacity. That's not a big deal it just means more money on mags... but sadly will mean no odin M12 can be used (not that I have one.... yet). Now the bit that I can't understand is the barrel length. It's only 300mm. I mean wtf. The gun has an extra 4 inches of front end which sticks out the front so a 406mm barrel should fit easily.  Why did they make it with a smaller inner barrel? So does this mean a longer barrel should be fitted which optimises the use of all the gun (so an added £60 if a pommy EG barrel is used).  This is not a debate on the length of the barrel. I'll assume the standard will be used.

Go on then... which one should I get?

416. I don't enjoy carrying a heavy, long Rifle about. Plus, as you have stated, the 416 takes standard M4/M16 magazines.

417. I like big rifles and I cannot lie. Mag pouches are reasonably easy to come by these days too plus you won't look like every other ST6 wannabe.

Oh, 13hrs I've not sure if I've seen that movie, but it does ring a bell.... I'll have to have another look at it...

I've seen the Redwolf review of the 417 and it doesn't look large... I mean my SOCOM inner barrel is 363mm plus an extra few inches for the flash hider... and from the receiver to the edge of the flash hider its that's 15inches (SOCOM) vs 18inches (417)

The standard 417 isn't all that huge, it's just the rail is super chunky. Personally I want the G28 or at the least a 417 with the Recon kit on it that extends the barrel and adds a chunk of length to the rail too!

As I own both I would say go for the one you like the look off the most.

However if you were going to make a DMR in the future then the 417 would be a better base gun.

To be honest I really had no plans to make DMR... I like the look of both as they both ally to different styles of play. I already own 2 CQBR and the SOCOM. Hell I've even got a sniper springer laying around which I've totally forgotten about.

If I stick a longer barrel,  and shove a m100 into it  and a firefly hop setup then I should get a better effective range I expect.. No other upgrades.

I'm kinda swaying towards the 417 too... I think...  just need a good shove to make my mind up I think...

Not sure of the cylinder volume or if it's vented on the 417 so worth checking before you get a real long inner barrel. I'm about 5'10" and find it a little long in the shoulder personally even with the stock collapsed. That's just me though I'm a small gun person. I don't mind heavy but long an heavy with all that weight hanging out there isn't for me. Not a fan of the delta but would be my choice out the 2.

That's valid point. I'm the same height and I don't mind heavy guns. My systema weighs a bloody tonne and I don't mind karting that around, but it's a small form factor so easy to use and sling around. I guess it's different when the weight is distributed up front so it will get a tad tiring to run around I expect. Solution bipod and dry ground to lay on! And no I'm not getting down in the wet....

Re the cylinder  the 417 will use a type D vented cylinder on a 300mm inner barrel.  A longer barrel at 407mm will need a type B. I do have a spare unvented pommy type A laying around somewhere though...

Update: I've gone 417... now to stick a M95 in when I get it...but that's all... gonna be the first gun I don't go bonkers with upgrades I think..

On top is the Recoil SOCOM just to give perspective. 

The 417 is solid... It weighs about 4.5kg according to the front of the box...

Thanks guys.... at least this will allow me to adapt my game style during the day...

Now onto the next crucial step which will be changing out the stock spring..... however, the buffer tube nut is bigger than a M4/AR15 variant nut and I'll need a new spanner.... And can I get hold of one? Hell no!... out of stock everywhere!
