Hi Guys/Girls!

Just recently started with air soft as i have been on other type of gaming things like paintball and laser sites.

Was given a CM16 Raider GBB so this is my starter gun, got two mags and a shed load of accessories both clothing and gun wise.

Going to be heading down to AWAherts as soon as i can to start playing but wondered if you had any advice that would be helpful in my new venture playing air soft.

(i realize a GBB isn't the most ideal gun to start with but hey it was free and everyone needs to start somewhere, i am in the process of looking into AEG but that will have to wait for when i have the funds!!)

so yeah hi everyone and any advise would be much appreciated :)

For some advice on basics.

As for the gun, your right that GBB's are not ideal to start off with as they are expensive to run and maintain but the gun you have is pretty decent for a GBB especially considering it's G&G.

I'd say go to a skirmish, see how your GBBR performs and how practical it is then decent if you want to go down the AEG line or build around your GBB, (Spare mags, gear etc.)

thanks for the welcome and the links ill dive straight into those and get my head round it all!

yeah good idea to go with what ive got and see how things go, id rather have an AEG to be honest but alas for a free gun i couldn't really pass it up at the time as its a step in the right direction!

Hey Man! Welcome to the forums! An AEG is more ideal to start with, but go with want you want really. Kaza pretty much summed it up :L :)

No problem! Yeah an AEG is more ideal, but why not try and work around what you've got now you've got it? Free aswell! You'll need to get your head round GBB mechanisms, how to maintain them, how to clean and take them apart for upgrades (If needed)

And if you find it non practical at skirmishes, or just not your style, you can easily sell up and buy yourself a very decent AEG for that sort of money, something in the G&G Combat Machine range, or Top tech's. Don't forget most of the accessories you already have for your GBB will fit on an AEG somewhere too.

Also I'd advise you to first spend money on 'needed' stuff (Goggles, face protection, load carrying, cambat gear, boots, spare mags etc.) not just go out and buy a whopping new ACOG for £150 then realise you've only got 30 rounds worth of magazine, or no goggles. (Stupid huh? But some people do it:P )

yeah see that's one thing im not up to date on is cleaning and caring for this particular style of gun.... but i was hoping either someone on here would give me some tips speically for my type of gun or the site im going to attend will give me some pointers.

I have Goggles, face protection, load carrying, combat gear, boots, spare mags was gonna get one or two more though.

i also have gloves plenty of gas, lube (teehee) and BB's got a mini tool kit for if i have anything i need to sort there and then.

 
could anyone advise a good way to reload on gas in the field?

 
As my Engineering teacher once said, when threading a copper tube: "You treat it like you treat a woman, you put plenty of lube on, then screw it nice 'n 'ard!"

Anyway, check this out, might be of some help:


Your going to want to keep the barrel well cleaned and lubed (but don't go OTT on the lube however tempting it may be ;) - )

Your going to want to put some silicone spray/oil (AKA lube) on all the seals on your mag, the valve where you release the gas, where the gas goes in from the bottle, and where it goes into the gun.

When your storing the gun I'd leave about 1/3 of a mag full of gas in to prevent your seals drying out, but before you do that I'd vent out any current gas leftover in the mag (In short jets so you don't freeze the seals) Then, keeping the valve open put a few drops of oil in the top.

thanks guys! proper impressed with the help you both have given me so far! i knew about storing gas in the mag to keep the seals intact but will start doing the lubing up as well as i previosuly hadnt been doign all the places you have said!

yeah i have a nice little molle belt that i can stick the gas in! so looks like im pretty much getting there all but actually having a match!

any advise on that? i did read this thread as i dont wanna be "one of those people"

Yea, skirmish wise, you should be fine. Don't be a cock, get stuck in, talk to some regulars, get involved with as many things as you can, ask questions, but most of all have fun, enjoy and don't worry about anything! Make sure you get hit ASAP though I'd say, then you know what it feels like and yer won't be fearing the ineitable anymore ;) You'll have a great time.

oh trust me i know what it feels like! been shot with a multitude of weapons over the years admittedly i haven't been shot by anything in the past year or so but it should be to hard getting back used to it, hell im covered in ink as well so im a bit of a glutton for punishment! is there any other form of compact gas loader that would be easier to use other than carrying a big old bottle with me?

 
Ah ok, thats good then!! I'm afraid there is no other way that I know of, which again is another reason why GBBR's aren't very practical, but dump pouches are deep so you won't notice it really. A speedloader is advisable for lo cap magazines too, you can pick them up for a few quid anywhere really.

 
RE the Gas Loaders I've seen them in the form of hand grenades but I dont know good they are mate, have a looksie on zeroone

Let me know when you're headed to AWA Hertz and I'll try my best to get there too and show you the ropes, I've been looking to try there.

ah fair enough i thought i may be a long shot on the gas loader, i don't really fancy buying something else and it end up being unreliable!

Water bottle pouches supposedly work mate depending on the size of the can. Take a look on military 1st I've seen them there.

I dont think I'll be able to make the 18th as I'm going to the Sandpit, sorry. :(
