Do you (PTFO) play the objective?

Id say rather people who just turn up to shoot at things vs people that play the game for what it is

Some might opine that it's a game of shooting at things, or else why are we waving toy gun around?

Don't get me wrong, I like objectives and am often the chap camping on the McGuffin to defend it from the attack that never reaches it.  But I'm often the sole chap doing that.  Defence can be a thankless task.

True and you are right but personally if I go anywhere I like to at least give the objectives a go. Fire fights happen where they happen but I feel games play better if there's something to gain out of it rather than just a K/D ratio.

I def agree with you that Seth K is probably using this for his perma-dream of opening a next-gen airsoft site.

At the same time tho it's generated a pretty nice discussion thus far ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

One thing I've been idly thinking about is whether it would be possible to add a level of incentive into the mix for genuinely winning, small prize per winning member or whatever. Probably wouldn't work too well for a straight skirmish for reasons you've already stated.

Another thing I was thinking of is a messenger-esque role that could be divvied out by marshals, essentially you'd have certain people each taking a site-issued radio and trying to stick to one area of the site to keep team-mates around them updated on the specific objectives in play, steps required etc - I've found the biggest problem with playing the objective in certain games is down to how it can be hard to keep track of the objectives! People who end up securing some/completing them might never end up updating the rest of the team, and IMO that's a key part of why some people tend to regress into playing for kills.
Valid points but I think once you start adding physical incentives to the game it will bring out the worst in players no matter how small it is . Example I saw happen was a simple capture the building game ,  and in the building was a bag of Haribo’s for the winning team that held it at the end , nothing special no free life memberships or a new gun or anything epic just a bag of sweets ! AND the cheating/non hit taking went off the scale ! ? They did try it again a couple of wks later but exactly the same thing happened .

Crazy, really shakes one's belief in humanity.

Oh and that was your 2500th post. Nice!

Bit more memorable too, no one remembers that time you hit a guy with a BB. But an epic capture or defence, that's a good story.

So true, but when you get the drop on an incoming wave, it's sweet.

Exactly.

None of my fun stories of playing airsoft ever ever consist of only "do you remember when I shot that guy" there's always much more to the fun stories.

Mate, I'd sell my soul (not my 'sole?), for haribo cola bottles, my favorite sweets.

Im there to shoot people and have fun, if that coincides with the objective then great, otherwise Ill happily pick off other players and let someone else worry about the objective, too much running around for my liking :P

But mostly it depends on the site and what the objectives are. Ive been to some where its just so damn convoluted that I simply gave up even trying and just turned to shooting people. I dont remember the name of the site, somewhere near Peterborough I think, old disused RAF base (not SWAS, another one, First and Only perhaps?) where the site was huge, Id never been there before, the objectives were seriously confusing and simply too much going on, they wanted us to split up into individual squads and squad A get the morter to position B whilst squad B gets some flags from point C to point F and at position F swap those for money to buy rounds at position D to take back to position B for squad A to use to support squad C who are at position X waiting for squad D to.... etc. etc. etc. and I just gave up. The site was massive, didnt know my way around. Each respawn point had a poorly laminated tatty map stapled to it in the worlds lowest .jpg resolution that I couldn't make heads nor tails of. So we just headed towards the sounds of any shooting and joined in.

If you try to make it too in depth people are going to stop caring, it why simple games work best. Everyone knows what theyre doing with a good attack/defend rolling respawn or plant the bomb style game, and you still get plenty of shooting done which is basically what we've paid to do.

Similar thing for me.

I like clear linear objectives and sneaking around to get into position before a (coordinated?) attack.

Problem I've seen is the mix of of the two teams.  You usually get the regulars on one side and the rentals with walk-on's on the other.

I do like a challenge and don't really car who wins at the end of the day but its frustrating to be on a side where everyone goes off and does their own thing without a clue.

Its not usually that bad and there are usually some regulars who know the site you can join up with.

So today we had a VIP escort game.  After fragging a room full of enemy and reviving the VIP, he and I set off for his final objective point, passing half of our team on the way, with me yelling like a demented fishwife for them to... escort the VIP.

Not a single one of them did so.  I got him into the objective solo with 2 seconds on the game countdown, proper Hollywood style.

One man army, me, but it highlighted that many folk either don't care, or can't even remember what game mode they're meant to be playing.

I rarely play for the objective. As I rarely visit the same site twice, I don't know enough about the site to know where the objective is let alone have the skill to complete it!

It isn't always realistic for older players to concentrate on the objective.

I have fallen twice in my last four games.?

I usually have to make do with giving support to those rushing forward. Not a problem for me.

I tend to not to play the objective but I'll pay with the objective in mind, running interference and taking the fight away from the objective to give the ones actually playing it an easier fight. If we're defending I'll be around the edges picking off smaller groups pulling agro. If we're attacking I'm on the flank taking out defenders from behind. You don't have to play the objective to play objective.
