I'm no expert in this but what i do after every skirmish is clean the boots down with warm water and a brush, leave to dry. Apply a coat or 2 of boot polish (depending on how much you've put on before), again leave to dry. Once all done give it a light coat of Dubbin wax.

But to answer your question buffering your shoes to a shine after the polish is dried won't hinder the protection of the polish.

I've been told dubbin ruins leather over long term and parrafin is better,I just stick to regular polish :P

Use Nikwax waterproofer. You polish as normal then apply nikwax after.

Use some saddle soap to help keep leather waterproof and prevent the nasty water stains - Aen ex rider
