Maybe they have ADHD? People with ADHD are greatly helped with subtitles, especially when there are other sources of noise. Even though their hearing is perfectly fine, they have a thing called central auditory processing disorder where it's difficult to filter out the sounds you want to hear and sometimes they get a bit mixed up  and it's difficult to process dialogue. There's a joke in the ADHD community - "I can't hear without my subtitles!"

I didn't know that, thanks. Apparently everyone they know does the same so in this case it's more of a year-group thing, seems to start in Uni where there's loads of other stuff going on so is useful and then the habit's formed.

Definitely an ADHD thing, I know people in their 40's and 50's who need the subtitles to concentrate - drives me nuts, as it distracts me the whole time.

For me it's the lack of enunciation on modern Series. Mumbling dialogue.  Someone did a YT video that showed scenes from classic Star Trek and Discovery to highlight the issue and how things have changed over time.

I know some slightly older folks who watched so many foreign shows (mostly Scandinavian crime dramas) that they got used to subtitles and just didn't want to turn them off when going back to shows in English.  I did hear of some internet-video related reason for it being 'a thing' for Gen Z, maybe something to do with closed captions or similar, but I can't exactly recall now.

When SWMBO and I did actually watch TV I would put them on to help her language skills and kinda got used to it....  Now we're a bit weird as a family in that we'll have our own stuff on a tablet playing - TV is off and we have a single ear bud in so we are listening to whatever crap is being watched but still doing other family things.

Ironically now shes fecked off back to her home country, I watch things from there with subtitles for my language skills ready for when I'm off.  Its quite funny picking up on mistakes - or when some things just wouldn't be accepted I'm thinking early Dragon Ball Z.  They're a kinky bunch i tell you.

My (teen) daughter often does it with modern stuff because of the sound balance issues and near constant score and foley.

Co-incidentally, she was watching the Historical Documents today - Space Seed, A Taste of Armageddon - without issues because of the clarity.
