    Baofeng 888 are cheap and cheerful and plenty good to begin with. Can often pick a pack of two up for £20 on Amazon. Accessories are cheap and plentiful. Both of you would need Foundation licenses if you wanted to go the amateur radio route although it's easier than you think these days.
