I won't go into my opinions on DMRs (TL:DR: I think it's pointless. 1.1J is enough. However, I also know some people love DMRs, so play your way first and foremost), but if you're looking at a platform to upgrade to one, I'd just say go with what you like the look of. For example, I love m14s and I have two of them, despite them being an absolute ball-ache to work on, despite me probably being able to get similar results with an AR-15 based rifle and their easy V2 gearboxes. If you like the rifle, you're more likely to use it, even if it's not the most optimal, and that comes down to personal preference. I love my US weapons, for example, but one of the guys I get a lift with to my local airsoft site loves Russian kit which I think it mostly hideous outside of a simple AKM or AK47 :P

If you plan on doing any milsim, filmsim or period airsoft, I'd advise going with something that is a DMR in the real-steel shooting world, as some a lot of these events will require it and even in a skirmish setting, some sites will be miffed / not let you use an ARP9 with a drum mag that is locked to semi at 1.6J (and I don't blame them. Not entirely).

A bolt action isn’t a DMR ,

A designated marksman rifle (DMR) is a modern scoped high-precision rifle used by infantrymen , unlike the bolt action sniper rifle are almost always semi-automatic as these have higher rate of fire and typically use larger capacities magazines than a dedicated sniper bolt action rifle to allow rapid engagement of multiple targets.

aye and a pistol isnt a dmr but by airsoft classifications it can be... as far as iv seen(here in ni we have a 1 joule flat rule so we dont get this benifit) but for mainland the dmr rules in play allowing higher fps but with minimum engagement distances do actually change things. rather than getting into details id rather ask ops intent/ thoughts. for all i know may be thinking true dmr but theres a wide variety of how the term is used in this case and could be used... nevermind a bolt action converted to be used with other methods of fire (polarstar as an eg)

so is it just the dmr ability's you want? do you care for any firing type. any style of weapon youd like to have it built around? is an aug the sort of thing you'd be thinking? i do have an aug and whilst certain parts are harder to find the gearbox and disable is fairly simple. even removing automatic is really easy.

that would depend entirely on what you want.

do you want a dmr that's based off something realistic looking/feeling, or will anything that lobs bb's with dmr energy?

do you want silence, do you want noise, do you care about "recoil" (insofar as recoil applies to anything airsoft), what's your expected round count, budget, tolerance for precision, teching skills etc etc.

however given it seems this thread is primarily a conversation peice then the WE svd, because it's cool.

The WE SVD actually has decent range. I am getting rid of mine because I get bored easily and left handed (not brilliant for the optics).

bang for your buck I would go with the cyma M14 really good range out the box. Gas wise Kjw 10/22 is good with decent after market support

Was simply referring to the descriptive title of DMR not the application as OP asked for a base gun for a DMR build , which by recognized definition is a semi-automatic long arm firing a standard issue caliber round(5.56/7.62 etc) not a bolt action which on the whole use a none standard specialist caliber(.338 Lapua for example)round .

We’re Just moving in to the realms of silly semantics when we start talking about a pistol being a DMR in airsoft , it’s like claiming a HPA’ed drum mag on a hi-capa makes it a support gun ?

Only trying to keep OP on the right track .👍

Personally I've always favoured sites that insist on a modicum of realism when it comes to weapon classes, such as box mags only on genuine support guns, dmr's being single shot long guns, although the particular models can be open to interpretation given the number of nations that probably deploy weapon systems other than ar or ak based guns, & obviously snipers being just that, based upon real world sniper platforms.

Only if the above criteria are met, should users then up the FPS to site & class limits.

& as @BigStew has pointed out, the cyma M14 is an awesome base for a dmr, lotta bang for your bucks👍

Also, if you work on an m14, you're pretty much diving in at hardmode, so then doing any work on other AEGs will be a piece of cake ;)

oh indeed, but range isn't it's problem the problem is the precision is just never going to be the same as a well dialled in aeg or hpa.

but that's just my standards of accuracy are the problem not strictly speaking the gun.

Yeah it can be dialed in nicely bit he kick throws your aim. Who'd have thought it. I can still get a body hit at 60m.

oh not the kick, that's the fun part, it's the change in fps from cooldown.

plus getting it to seal good on a ml rubber is tricky, really wish there was an aftermarket hop unit for it.
