A very good book for mental health is De Botton's The Consolations of Philosophy.  

 

Kabat-Zinn's stuff is very practical meditation work, complete with CD practice guides, that has been clinically tested.  

 

Very cheap second hand.

I'm so accustomed to doing it that I just do it anywhere, out and about, walking streets, going the shops, etc, it's kind of surreal sometimes because you can get a kind of dissociation and start seeing everything from a birds eye / third person perspective, it's wild.

It’s taken me 3 months to loose one stone. Apparently the hole in my shorts became bigger over that time period for the stone to drop through it. But damn was it hard work doing it. Now I’m hell bent losing another as my plate carrier fits better. What more incentive does one need ;)

I was doing lots of running and keeping fit losing weight but now I been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis.

 

The pain in my knee was getting worse everytime I did a run and now I can't run the doctor says :(

 

I can cycle but it's not the same and I feel less less motivate to do f all now.

Does it hurt all the time or only when you put load through it? Might be worth talking to an osteopath. My doctor said I had arthritis but it was actually runners knee - where the muscles in the thigh develop out of whack and pull the knee cap offline.

Doc's are very quick to give it a name & chuck pills at it, only real way to know how bad it is will be to get an MRI, which they will do their best to deny you purely due to cost, if you've got any healthcare cover through work etc, might be worth exploring the possibility that might cover it ?.

I've had something similar going on for 30 months, medics playing it down & me saying its a lot worse than they say, finally they've admitted I need a new knee ☹️, so I'm on a "list" FFS.

I'm in the process of coming off of Sertraline because since going up to my current dosage I've been getting really painful joints. I've had a load of blood tests and stuff and the doctors are just "there's nothing there, it's probably arthritis...you are getting older Mr Brown" which to my mind is just getting me off their list for the day. Having done some reading and talked to lots of others on Sertraline it seems that it's not an uncommon side effect!

Fuck, that's not good, I'm on it & have been for a few years,  do I stay on it & have pain😭, or come off & be a homicidal maniac 😈

That's interesting you say that. My kid's mum had been on sertraline for years and developed a lot of joint and chronic pain in that time. I may have to mention this to her.

Have you had any side effects of withdrawal? I've gone cold turkey for the past week as I ballsed up getting my repeat prescription in on time and some of them are really screwing me up

Not yet. I'm coming off it slowly - half doses every other day for a few weeks, then just half doses etc...

 

Going cold turkey though...oof. You have my sympathy!

I've been on it at 50mg dose for about 5 yeras. Earlier this year I complained about being constantly tired (one of the other side effects) and was told "well maybe you're more stressed and that's why you're tired. Let's put the does UP to 100mg" and that was when I started developing the pain in my fingers and hands. Don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly "low mileage" and I know full well that there are pains I've had for a while, but the feeling in my fingers that my joints are trying to separate and not being able to grip things properly is definitely new.

 

Your mileage may well vary of course, don't come off them "just in case" if you don't have those side effects yourself!

Lol, I'm definitely high mileage, think I've been "clocked" more than once, plus been on 100mg for ever, so might be a good time to try to see my gp for a face to face review ?

prob is I've always been very physical, work, sports, bedroom😜 (not 😂), so the wear & tear is definitely relevant too, so it's difficult to gauge🤔

F2F would be best, I had my review on the phone with whoever was on triage at the time so it was more "I want to come off the pills", "OK, here's how you do it" than actually discussing what's happening. Thing is, I need to prove to myself if the pains are down to the sertraline or not and the only way to do that is come off it. If it goes when I'm off it (or even at a lower dose) then I'll be happy. I can either stay off it and develop better coping strategies or ask to go on a different drug.

Thanks. Like I posted above, it's my own stupid fault so I can't really moan too much. I wasn't doing too badly till yesterday (my general mood had been pretty good too) then they hit me. First off was a weird fuzzy head, a bit like when you wake up still pissed after a night on the booze, followed by what can only be described as feeling like I'm getting very mild electric shocks. The latter were particularly worrying till I found out its just an effect of withdrawal. 

 

In short, don't fuck about with your meds

It sort hurt a little on the outside touching it sometimes but asI have not been running it feels pretty good other then the cracking/crunching noise my knee makes lol

I am seeing a specialist on the 7th at my request because I need to be 100% sure what going on.

I only takes pills if really need to as I given tramdol to take 4 times a day by my last doctor for over year and I went cold turkey on that shit....worst time of my life anything else is nothing compared to that week of hell.

Mine only hurts when I'm going up stairs, getting up/sitting down that kind of stuff. Basically when the joint takes a lot of load. Years of mountain biking basically made the outer muscles in the thing develop more than the inner muscle so the kneecap gets pulled outwards by the tendons and it stops running in the little groove in your knee joint. Strengthening exercises for the inner thigh muscle pull it back in line and it stops hurting. The exercises suck balls but worth it.

The noises ain't a good sign, might need to get the joint flushed out surgically & knock running on the head, for fitness at least.

Yeah tramadols a mofo, they left me on it for nearly 3 years, like you, bout 6 years ago I forced myself to go cold turkey, as the weaning me off crap that the doc recommended just made things worse, so stocked up on reading material & sweet stuff & told the wife to pretty much ignore me for the next week as I'm prob gonna be a miserable cnut, typically her reply was "what, more than usual 😱"

 

Knee surgeon recently tried to give me a script for more tramadol FFS, I politely told him to stick em up his chuffer 🤣

I've had to pack running in.   I miss it so much that I dream of running.  Arthritis sucks.  However, there are many ways to do cardio though.  Hi-rep free weights and bag work are good for me.  Find what works for you.

 

My knee is fucked up, but supports and topical opioids work well for airsoft/hiking/combat sports.  Full time opioids are bloody awful.   Don't give up or get down hearted.  There is nothing bad or good but the mind says so.

You don't need to run to be healthy. I've never been a runner, since my build is not conducive to being good at it, or it being particularly healthy for me to do too much. When I was a teenager in my school rugby team, I had to stop because I got shin splints because even when I'm "slim" I'm still pretty chonk. I could probably do running if I bought some expensive, fancypants trainers, but I hate running, so I would likely not do it and it'd be a wasted investment. I hate exercising for the sake of doing exercise, so the only running I do is during airsoft weekends. I've found that doing things that don't feel like I'm exercising are the best, so for me that's martial arts, airsoft and cycling to get from point A to point B; it's rare I go for a cycle just to go for a cycle. I've forced myself to hit the gym too, which is the only "workout" that I do, but I don't do cardio (since I do cardio when I cycle to and from the gym) and just focus on strength training, as it's what I enjoy. 

 

Also, swimming is both a full-body workout and it's low impact on your joints; it's like a super-workout. Highly recommend it, plus it's a skill that is worryingly lacking in this day and age; loads of people I know are absolutely terrible at it, and I live in a coastal town where the beaches are packed as soon as temperatures reach around 25 celcius! That's a free swimming pool right there, so how people are so bad I will never know :D

Yeah I going to cycle more as my main thing and do basic exercises at home with few weights.

I seen the doctor today he said my knee is the shape of someone who 60+ I am only 36 lol.

The gap in my knee I have pretty big for my age and now I need MRI next to get a better look what going on :(

He said no running at all for now and maybe never.
