Site owners and marshals; does this mean we can get back to shooting each other dressed like a tree? Or do we need even more relaxations to be able to get away with it? (I can’t remember at what point last year sites re-opened after lockdown 1.0).

I think we need more information on gatherings for outdoor activities and sporting meets. Hopefully that will be.explained in bojos roadmap. 🤞

Ditto, SA E-07 that so far has only been used to seriously fuck up cardboard boxes in the garden on full auto!

I have spent a lot of time getting it to shoot like a laser, it needs to do what it was born to do; pop rentals in the arse from 20m!

You think that the other political parties could do any better?

I'm not a BoJo fan, but from what I can see he's stuck between a rock and hard place. Between the Scientists, a rabid media (fuck you Piers Morgan), and a pissed off population he will never please everyone.

Many errors have been made - no doubt about it - but I very much doubt the opposition would have done any better.

There are other governments in other countries who have done far better.

I also think it's more that Boris is stuck between the science and the influential hard right of his own party. I have a tiny slither of sympathy for him in that regard.

Who exactly?

Taiwan, Singapore, NZ to name but some.

Singapore has been amazing considering they are both a travel hub and one of the 5 most densely populated countries on earth.

A few years ago the NHS conducted a 3 day pandemic exercise who's recommendations were suppressed and largely ignored by the government.

Many of those recommendations if enacted would have drastically cut the amount of deaths and infections we have had up to date.

These countries have a far smaller population than the UK. In fact if you add the three together you get roughly the same number as the UK. London alone has a bigger population than Singapore or New Zealand.

Taiwan was one of the worst hit countries back in 2003 with SARs - so rightly they invested in Epidemic control. But they also have methods of government control that would unpalatable with the UK population, for example - your phone tracking your whereabouts 24/7 and health officials tracking you down should you choose to wander off anywhere.

Singapore hospitalised everyone over the age of 45 with that tested positive with Covid (irrespective of severity) - how would a country of nearly 67 million handled that? Singapore has about 380k people over the age of 70 (the most vulnerable to Covid), yet the UK has ~7 million over 70 - that's more than the entire population of Singapore.

Jacinda Smugface might gloat about how their country tackled the pandemic, but ultimately Sadiq Khan oversees a bigger population than she does. NZ has a population density of 18 per sq Km, London? 5701.

If you want to compare us to other countries, look at France. Roughly the same population - 67million to our 66.65million. Granted, they have around 80k deaths (compared to our 120k), but have less than half the population density (122 per sq Km to our 275 per sq Km). There are other variables, such as obesity rates (which has a huge effect on Covid survivability) and general population health (in which France is better than than us on both counts) which also have to be factored.

The wheels of power move slowly and in step with what the population and the press will let them get away with. Cygnus was 4 years before the Covid-19 outbreak. I agree that the government should have been much better prepared for a large scale pandemic, but given that there only a handful of global pandemics in the entirety of the 20th Century, you could imagine the outcry from an media-fueled austerity-ridden populace about spending large quantities of cash on equipment that could have sat gathering dust in a warehouse for potentially decades. Hindsight eh?

Again - a lot of mistakes were made. People died that probably shouldn't. But if you don't like the Government, make it known at the ballot box at the next local and general elections.

I'll be brief as I am on a walk. Population shouldn't be an issue as we should have been investing more in the NHS to support our population, instead it has been bled dry or invested into frankly awful outsourced contracts. Which is why singapore managed it better then us, because they have an adequate health service that matches the population.

You mentioned population density with NZ, but why not Singapore? Singapore has more population density then London yet handled it far better. Why? They had a health service that was proportionate to the health service amongst other reasons.

With regards to setting equipment aside for potential pandemic, that's what many countries should do. The health service needs to be effective for disastrous events, not "barely functioning" in normal times.

Criticise NZ all you want, they recognised they only had to do one thing, close the borders, which they did, it worked and saved them from hemorrhaging more money then most countries. One of the first things you do in a pandemic is to restrict travel. We didnt do that, in fact Boris was bent on herd immunity, until he was proved wrong.

I certainly do vote at the ballot, but the role of an opposition party is to keep an existing government in check so that people are better informed at the next election. Though sadly the opposition is pretty feckless at the moment.

Let’s just hope tomorrow bojos announcement brings a glimmer of hope to us all.

In hindsight things could have been done differently but sadly we are where we are. I’m sure the blame game for this will last for many years, let’s just hope that is the light at the end of the tunnel we all need desperately.

Hopefully this will be the last lockdown but I hear the parks are full of people out enjoying the sunshine and it makes you wonder if that will be the case. We are fortunate in a sense that our sport is mainly outdoors. As long as we as players and site owners are sensible then there is hope and light at the end of this tunnel.

Let’s see what the announcement brings.

Evidence seems to be going towards that transmission rates go down with people who have caught COVID despite having  vaccine which is some good news.

Sadly my crazy elderly battleaxe Grandmother has been very unlucky as shes currently battling the Bristol Covid Variant despite having her first Pfizer vaccine 4 weeks ago. Shes doing... ok. But it's touch and go. We'll know in a few days time.

I have also been informed that my estranged Father has caught it. Hes an ass, but I wouldn't wish it on him. Mixed emotions.

I wish I could begrudgingly praise this government for their response, but I really cant going by the stats.

A lot of good points there @Speedbird_666

I would, however, disagree with your last paragraph.

The idea of vote with your feet to change things that we are not happy with.

Nice idea but doesn't work.has it ever worked?

We vote for who we think will change things but how long is it before we become unhappy because they are not doing as they promised. And that,I think,is because they can't.They are controlled by the faceless moneymen who pull the strings and say what they want to happen.maybe I'm cynical but have had my eyes opened and now can see.

But in any case there is a saying that you can ,'please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Much appreciated.

She is certainly a character. Funnily enough we mostly talk about politics when we are together. She was in the running to become a conservative counsellor in the early 90s, she introduced me to John Major, William Waldagrave and William Hague at various Conservative party fundraisers and events. On my 11th birthday she bought me a signed Maggie Thatcher autobiography. John Bercow used to stay at her house when he was a young whipper snapper trying to gain influence.

She has always been disappointed how I turned out politically despite her best efforts. Though she is happy that I am at least active in politics, have conviction in my belief and do more then post on the internet about it! (Honest! :-D)

I certainly hope I can continue lively political debate with her for years to come!

If we all get released at once like we did last year - the beaches will be rammed, parks will be over populated and people will go back to being dicks and within 3-6 month we will be back to where we are now, the re-opening should be slow n steady and imho anyone who refuse to get the vaccine (unless it’s a medical thing) should be made to stay in lock down until they do.

Thank you for your wishes! I have high Hope's.

I also loathe the demise of real political change as written in the other thread :-).

Though it's a variation on a theme, I wonder if a true Socialist Nationalist party would be palatable to the majority. Good public services, putting the country first and having a points based immigration system (But without the racist warmongering Nazi authoritarian regime)

I hope your Grandmother makes a full recovery, I'm sorry to hear she contracted the virus even with the Vaccine.

You raised valid points in response to my post. I would like to respond properly but I'm cooking a roast dinner at the mo. If I get time later I shall follow up.

All the best.
