Necro thread warnings

Idea pinched from other forums:

It might be handy to warn users with an "Are you sure...?" when they're about to necro-post to a thread that hasn't had a comment on it for quite some time.

Also, when a thread does get necroed, it would be great to have a visible flag at the point of the necro and/or top of the page to clue in further commentards that they're piling into a zombie thread.

Prompted by this corker of a 5 year necro.

sounds like a great idea, a wee popup that says "are you sure, this thread hasn't been used in x years" would be great.

not sure about warning other people though, part of the fun of forums is trying to be the first to spot a necro :P

It would depend on the wording of the warning.

A necro post that advises someone what they should have bought 5 years ago is a bit pointless, but following on in line with an existing old topic could be reasonable.  At least it shows that a new user has searched threads

Sure, I'm only suggesting a "This is an old thread, are you sure you want to bump it?" style notification just to verify that it's deliberate rather than inattention.

Please check the dates on threads before posting. This topic is quite old.

If the topic starter would like this thread reopened, please PM me with a link back to this topic.

This is a general message which helps us speed up forum moderation.

Thank you.

@Rogerborg we do not have an automatic warning based on the date of the last post.

We do already have a Moderator prompt for Necro posts that simply locks the topic (as my post above).  It is not often used.

I finally did it.

After 90 days threads will show the following warning when going to post:

Any thoughts on the wording?

That should do the trick well.

Although it is quite a long warning to read through...

Sometimes not matter what is written, some users ignore it!!

maybe an image!

Looks good to me.

Of course, other forums use spiders and tombstones and such as a visual aide-mémoire. ;)

The <blink> tag will rise again.

Blink tag has been dead for a long time. It's time to move on :(

Should it not say This thread is completed? I find it rolls off the tongue more....

The above is something I'm waiting to hear rather than my actual opinion... 10 points for a correct guess

Nah, people do actually bump old threads with cause. Otherwise we'd just auto-lock them :)

I know, I was trying to reference the time when there was a long convo about using the word completed or something for a sale option and someone kept bringing it up with the proff... I didn't deliver I'm sorry

THE THREAD YOU ARE ABOUT TO REPLY IN IS OVER 3 MONTHS OLD, ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO RESURRECT  IT?. HAVE A THINK AND COME BACK IN 10mins......

tbh i don't have an issue with general topics as its saves new topics being created and keeps the info. in one place,
