it's illegal to paint a two tone gun black but is it legal to remove two tone paint

If it turns a IF into a RIF, then it's exactly as illegal, and has exactly the same defences.

Questions:

Do you think it's likely that you'll be found in possession of your airsoft gun(s) other than on the way to or from an airsoft skirmish?

If you are stopped under those conditions, what reasonable excuse will you offer to the offence of being in possession of an imitation firearm (realistic or otherwise makes no difference) in a public place?

No it's not legal to convert an IF into a RIF....regardless, it's always illegal.

HOWEVER, if you have a form of defence, you can use that in front of a judge (should worse case scenario and you be in the dock).

Of course, that's all dependant on why you're there whether he considers it a valid excuse.

So as long as it's not in a public place

No.  The act of conversion is always an offence, even if the RIF never leaves your private property.

However, if you answer the questions that I asked, there may be a treat at the end.
