Either way, like everyone is saying, a small torch to at least see where you're going at times is a good idea.

Yeah I think taking a torch would get me kicked off the game, since the rules say "NO PERSONAL TORCHES TO BE USED AT ANY TIME DURING THE EVENT" in big red letters.

I'd advise having a word with the organiser and explain your concerns. Tony at RIFT is a very reasonable guy, and I don't believe he'd never knowingly plan a dangerous event.

That particular event isn't a skirmish anyway. It's more of a horror experience, and I expect there's going to be something in place that makes not having a torch less ridiculous. Not that I've ever been to an event like that before, but I have been to RIFT sites countless times and I'm familiar with the organiser. I guess what I'm saying is, ask him, because I'd bet he's got his reasons and has considered the safety implications.

EDIT: Just had a look at the posting again, it says at the top that you get an 'event torch' as part of your game fee. So, chances are you will have one, but it won't be excessively bright (in order to keep the atmosphere scary I guess)

Yeah Tony always gives off a good impression - the event torch I believe is just for emergencies, but I might be wrong. I did say above that it was more of an atmosphere game, not a team skrimish thing, so we're unlikely to be running around like nutters. I think maybe some people are under the impression that it's a milsim type thing but nobody's allowed torches which is, yes, ridiculous.

Sure, an event like this is always going to raise some confusion. My personal interpretation of the rules is no personal torches except for emergencies, but that you'll be provided with an event torch for general usage. I might be completely wrong. The only way to know for certain to ask Tony before you go to make sure you're happy with the safety of the event.

It's worth noting though that this is the second of such event that they've held, and I'd guess they must have considered feedback from the first. I just had a quick search for the old feedback topic, and you can see that complained about too many torches ruining the atmosphere.

I didn't say it wouldn't get you kicked off. I simply suggested it for moving to the game area/out of the game area, cause y'know, i'd like my body to remain fully functional.

Like I said in my previous reply, it's not wise to be running around with a torch during the game anyways, suggesting it is would just be contradicting myself.

I can see now after Gregs post about people complaining about too many torches, but in that situation, moving in and out of safe zones to game start areas, I'd be shining it at the floor to see where I'm going and not walking into a deep hole of soft mud and water again.

But then again, it's Scotland, I should be used to it by now!

I've had some more info and I'm under the impression that who would usually be marshals, will be joining us as team leaders, so I expect they'll have a bit more kit in terms of escorting in and out of areas, visibility on players to watch out for injuries and such like.

Going back to the original question of the post, I think the only things I have time to buy are:

Low Profile Laser

Elbow/Knee Pads

Possibly a FAST helmet.

Other than that, I need to get some spare mags for my 226 (only got the 1 at the moment), and some high power gas for the cold climate (I went to buy Guarder Power Up gas, but it was out of stock wherever I looked. Maybe better luck next week). Looks like I probably need to spend another 100 quid in the next week.

Good pair of boots if you don't have already! Easy to roll your ankle in the dark so go steady and have fun mate.

Also, depending how your light conditions are (and if no torches are allowed - i.e. you won't be able to spot the opposition's torches from a way off), consider just taking a pistol (or a small rifle) - no need for a long range rifle when you can only see 10 feet, if that.

No rifles or aegs allowed - only pistols and spring shotguns :P

Picked up some new boots last week.

Some things that I have bought since making the thread:

- Thermal shirt and bottoms. It's going to be cold. And due to the nature of the game, there could be long periods of time moving slowly or not at all. Just a ubacs and jacket is not going to cut it.

- Yellow-tinted prescription goggles. The yellow tints will (apparently) help visual contrast as it gets darker

- Gloves. I went for fingerless ones since I'm going to be using my pistol almost exclusively, and I'm likely to get taken by surprise at times which means quick draws and fast shots. Less chance of fumbling this way.

- Black camo paint. There is likely a time when I will want to be invisible. Fingers and face are going to match the gear.

- Protein bars. Simple, but probably a decent idea. Not sure if there's a break in the middle or not, otherwise, it's 6 hours solid in the cold.

Have yet to buy:

Elbow and knee pads

Spare pistol mags

Winter gas

FAST helmet (not essential, but preferable)

Melee weapon

Pistol laser

Yellow tints work ok during dusk, but at proper night time they just reduce the amount of blue light getting into your eyes. Since you pretty much see in black and white in the dark you want as much light as possible getting in. Clear lenses are the way forward when it's properly dark.

only played two night games at GMA Tuddenham, both with work colleagues.....it was fun, they all enjoyed it and im sure you will as well at that site :)

both game nights i used tracer rounds so they knew where i was to shoot at, also the PEQ light and laser helped them aim at me better!.....if you want your team to see you, get one of those light up dog colors and put it on your arm :)....yeah we used them as well!

seriously though, i play there once a month and i still would need some form of light to see where im going at times, my boss ran past me, avoided the rubble and barrel but tripped over the tires!.

also, as above, i switched from yellow to clear lenses :)

you'll have fun though!

I bought some small but decent battery operated infer-red operated lights (also got ones that do noises rather than lights)... they come on when people walk past them and I usually set them up on known choke points to eliminate them going off for no reason (sometimes animals can set them off but I've never had a case of that happening...) have a look on eBay for things, even the most insignificant thing can sometimes be a big help!

Took all the advice on this on board and bought Bolle Raider ballistic glasses which come with clear, smoke and yellow. Prescription insert adapts for all three came back from the opticians yesterday.

Got the yellow lenses fitted at the moment, will be able to switch over to clear at some point in the evening when the time calls.
