I have been compiling htis list for a while and with the help of a few friends. I have also calculated (fancy word for putting hings in a calculator :P ) that if me and my brother were to get a ps4 that it would cost £625 compared to £492 gaming pc.

Well, my mum said it makes a nice change from airsoft...not sure if its a good thing or not...

You can cheap out on the case more.

Do you REALLY need a DVD drive?

Why wireless? Why not get an ethernet cable? If you DO want wireless, is there a better Mobo with wireless built in for the £65 you're spending between the two at the moment?

Does a PC not require RAM?

Or CPU Cooling?

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/F782P6

That's what you have there, take a look at what you can cheap out on (case!) and what else is available

If you go to partspicker, click edit this parts list then click on the part you want to choose (to change case, click where it says 'case' in blue writing, not the currently selected case) There's a zalman microatx case for £20

Using partspicker also tells you an ESTIMATED power usage (you don't need 500W supply) and any potential fitting/running issues with compatibility. I spent about a month messing around before buying any of my parts.

Once you've got parts that don't need big expenses, you can look at the other stuff getting a speed boost (quicker RAM, faster Read and write speed harddrive, maybe an SSD to boot windows from) Remember that you WON'T be running ARMA/Fallout/BLOPS on Ultra settings, but you can compete with the visuals of a PS4/Xbone for a reasonable price.

Please take a look at this if you can:

Thanks for all the help so far, much appreciated.

getting there, but:

Still need a CPU cooler, can reuse an old one (cleaned up) if it's right, but new ones from a fiver are fine.

The single stick of RAM is slightly cheaper and has basically the same performance. Plus it's from a reputable company.

Seagate HDD are great, faster AND cheaper than the WD version. Swap that out!

You've jumped up to the 4gb GPU, just double check it is actually an upgrade. google the differences and compare performance.

You like that case don't you....

Again, 500W is probably not necessary. admitedly not a huge amount can be saved, but pennies matter and do add up at this price point.

The DVD Drive can be stolen from your current PC if you need to. I've got a nice Pioneer Blu Ray drive in my PC. Cost me £110 to fit. Has never been used. Again, it's a tenner that can be put elsewhere on the build.

Speaking of small bits making a large difference:

and spending a little of that on a MoBo with USB 3.0 (which you DO want)
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/mYfZpg

and to get that case you wanted: http://www.diy.com/departments/colours-orange-satin-spray-paint-400ml/172179_BQ.prd

Have you checked the prices on Scan.co.uk too? :)

Also, you might be able to save that £85 by buying an old version of windows (brand new) eligible for the free windows 10 upgrade.

EDIT:

Does not have to be brand new, but you avoid a lot of potential problems that way. Or check whether you can buy the windows 7 upgrade for windows XP/Vista cheaper (and get that OS free).

get a 960 not a 750, its only about 40 more, and double the performance.

skimp out on the case, get some Chinese crappy one. aslong as it fits all your parts it doesn't matter.

do u really need a dvd player?

I don't actually know. Why would I?

One thing, this will probably help you a bit more. There are some very clever people on here, who know their computer technical stuff. But, there is a forum called "tomshardware" this is a very popular forum. With many active users, if you want some help, go there, it's a big forum, and you'll get some very good results there. You'll still get good answers here, just, you'll get some good answers there too! Good luck.

I realise it isnt in my best interests to get that case, however it does have fans already in there which in my mind is quite good. Is there a case out there with fans like that (not colour etc, I mean has fans) and that I can use?

So far...

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/rNNVVn

Bit worried about this:

Some Intel H81 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Haswell Refresh CPUs.

Unable to verify the Zalman ZM-T4 MicroATX Mini Tower Case and the Arctic Cooling Alpine 11 GT 28.6 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler are compatible.

Zalman ZM-T4 MicroATX Mini Tower Case has front panel USB 3.0 ports, but the Gigabyte GA-H81M-HD2 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard does not have onboard USB 3.0 headers.

I read somewhere that Kingston doesn't work so well with Intel CPU's.

Also, other than price what is the difference between the Seagate barracuda one and the one in the above link??

Thanks for the help so far all! But I am definitely not getting a ps4. Off down to the village centre tomorrow on a paper round (or other early morning) job...

My friends are saying that I should get an i5 processor and that i can't upgrade with a mini case. hmmmm Gonna have to make sacrifices. Opinions?

You should clarify with them that everyone is on the same page about what mini means in the context of computers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini_ATX

A mini case, is not necessarily a mini ATX case (to not add confusion, a case or motherboard are not mini ATX unless they say they are).

Don't worry too much about hyperthreading on your CPU - no need to go above an i5, but I would say perhaps an i3 is a little too small. Most games don't utilise it well, and most modern games are very good at utilising the GPU over CPU (the biggest exception being ArmA, which is one of the shittiest-ly made games when it comes to performance as it relies heavily on your CPU).

As people have said, get a 900 series - they are exceeding good value. Don't spend more than £40 on your case if you can help it, and look for other things that you can upgrade later. Upgrading the motherboard later on a little tricky if you ask me, whereas adding HDDs or SSDs is really straight forward.

Don't skimp on the PSU. The technology involved in making PSUs has remained the same for years and won't change soon. I'm still using a nice one I bought 5 years ago, and you can carry it over to any subsequent build. Also, cheaper ones might go kaput and - in some extreme cases - fry everything you own. The one you have picked looks decent enough.

Fans are something else that people always neglect to buy. Case fans are almost always complete crap - spend an extra £40-60 later on and get some nice, quiet, high flow ones and it'll improve your gaming experience significantly.

PC gaming isn't cheap I'm afraid. A £500 build in the UK is hard to do because parts here are about 20% more expensive than in the US (where most of the guides on this sort of thing are written).

Also, I'll see if I can get a hold of a Windows 10 key for you. I know a chap that gets them free through his work.

Just buy that aha. If it needs some doing, do it! The specs seem good to me, or enough to run some decent games. I have played arma 3 on a useless PC. Well, certainly not a gaming PC, and I could run arma 3 at 20 FPS, which isn't good, but the PC from Amazon is much better than the one I used... It may turn out, your PC is not good enough, well, just upgrade it. There's a website 'CanIrunIt' something like that, it'll help you see if the PC is good. Some smart lad will come tell me I'm wrong. Whatever you do, good luck..
